| She INSISTS on doing a trick for a treat Adie can be so very weird sometimes. I reward my dogs for coming in quickly from the back yard by giving them 1/2 of a tiny dog biscuit. They are all instructed to sit before they get it. Adie had decided that sitting isn't good enough. She refuses to take the treat until I have her sit, lay down, then speak. After that she happily grabs her little bite and scoots on into the house. Weird. She must think she has to show up the other dogs. Cassie, my shih tzu, will sometimes situp without being told to if she wants a treat really badly and now Skeeter has started doing the same. The surprising thing there is that I have not taught Skeeter anything. He has picked it all up from the others. He heals, sits, speaks and sits up. Now if I could just get them to understand that the best place to pee is outside! |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Sometimes if we are not quick enough handing out treats....Ramsey will do her entire routine....just in case we expected something other than sit.

Thor's Human Donating Member | Some of it is called "superstitious behavior." Animals do it too, just like we do. They know these tricks have caused good things to happen to them in the past, so they figure, why not try them now? Thor will always try to squeeze a handshake into a command he's not sure about. Like if I put him in a Down, he paws my hand first, just to cover all his bases. You can try to extinguish this behavior by ONLY rewarding when you have requested the behavior. Then they know the rule is, it won't work unless it was asked for.

| The behavior doensn't really bother me I just think its quirky. She will turn her head away and refuse the treat after she sits She waits for the "down" command, goes down then still refuses the treat unless I tell her to speak. THEN she will take it. She is always in such a cheerful mood about it! I tried reversing the order but she still insists on doing all three and each one has to be in response to a command. She's a funny little dog. |

| No, she's cute about it because she will squat and even lift her leg a little then trot over to me but she doesn't take her eyes off my face for a second. Usually she is looking around to see what the others are doing. She's checking to see if I was watching her. All I have to say is "go pee" and she trots off to properly do her thing. Poor thing has no tolerance for wet or cold. I understand why she fakes but I still don't let her get away with it. LOL |
