| unable to get a collar or harness on susie Hopefully someone can give me some advise on how I can get a harness or even a collar on Susie. Everytime I try she freaks out it really scares her she does not want anything going over her head or around her. She is 16 weeks tommorrw. |

| Have you tried a step-in harness? It might be the least "offensive."

| Mika was the same. Any new puppy will dislike anything new put on them. I would struggle to put a collar or harness on Mika but I would put it on and left it on for a while and then take it off. He got use to it and is happy for me to put his harness on now. I did have a collar on him but I now only use a harness as it is safer.

| I have never heard of a step in harness. What does it look like and where could I get one. |

| Check out this older thread for some suggestions: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...low-chest.html My girls both like the Puppia harnesses, which is more like a vest style harness, but you can get the step-ins in almost any variety. Definitely a Petsmart or Petco would carry an inexpensive step-in that you could buy as her "starter" harness.

| Luigi hated these too! Luigi hated all collars and harnesses too. I think it was do to the vet muzzling him when he was small because he was bitting the vet and his techs during a hospital stay. I only take off his collar (to hold his tags only) to bath him or brush him. When I first put one on him he used to bit at it to get it off. I only put his harness on to walk him or put him on his run. At first he would go crazy bitting, growling and snarling. But with patience and lots of love all I have to do is say, "who wants to go outside" and he patiently lets me put his harness on now. This has only been the past 3 weeks that he has allowed this. He is 7 months old. Now he only growls and snarls taking it off. LOL |

| My suggestion is to train Susie to accept handling in baby steps. First find one thing that you CAN do with her and praise her like there is no tomorrow. Will she sit quietly in your lap? This is a good place to start. Run one hand quickly down her back. Praise her and give her a treat is she remains quiet and still. Continue to stroke, praise, treat until she is absolutely comfortable. THEN and only then use your fingers and wrap them around her chest - barely touching her. Do it very quickly and release - the object is to get her to allow the touching WITHOUT moving. Continue touching, praising, treating until you can actually wrap your hands around her chest, put a bit of pressure on it and then release without her flinching. THEN take the harness and let her sniff it. Then run it down her back, praise and treat. Run it down her side, praise and treat, use it to make circles around her chest, praise and treat and then actually wrap it around her chest. When she is absolutely comfortable with this then and only then snap the harness closed and immediately unsnap it. The problem with most training is that we try to start at the finish. We need to always find a starting point from where we can do SOMETHING with our dog and build upon it with baby steps, adding as many steps as we can along the way. By the time we get to the end, our baby will be thoroughly comfortable AND will have learned many other things along the way. Forcing is not training, it is teaching the animal to submit because they have no choice. Believe it or not, if you use my method, you will get results a lot quicker than you think. If you try this and are consistent and don't push, I will bet you will be able to have the harness on Susie within a couple of days WITHOUT a fuss. |

| My Bailey hated harness ALOT as well, but now she associates it with going outside... I won't let her go outside with her harness and collar so she gets excited about it!!

| Getting her used to the harness in small steps sounds like a great idea. I will start again to introduce her to it. Thanks |

I concur. Baby steps and reward her for being good. You have to show her that it's nothing to be afraid of.
