| skiddish / scared / unsocialized Well here is our story! We adopted Charley from a lady about 4 hours from our home. I could not resist how beautiful Charley was! Even though she was almost 2 years old. That ment nothing to us. As we have adopted Charley, we have found her to be quite un-socialized. She is scared of people, things, almost everything. She is very trusting to my kids and husband but stangers she is quite nervious. We have had Charley about 1 month now and I have noticed she is getting MUCH better. Since we walk her almost 3-4 times a day. She is seeing the world! LOL.. I don't believe Charley was ever walked in her past home. She has just recently started to eat better also. She does not chew bones or toys.. But finally took a dental stick last night! LOL... So I do see some improvements! My question is, aside from exercise and walking outdoors, taking her with us everywhere (ie: petsmart, little errans), doggy playdates, what else can we do for Charley to help her become a dog again? We just want Charley to have the best doggy life ever! She is so cute! We love her to pieces already! Thanks everyone for your input! Michelle |

| Sounds like you are on the right track to me. I can't offer much except take her every place dogs are allowed. Since she apparently does well in the car, just car rides will get her out, introducing her to smells, noises and things she wouldn't come into contact with otherwise. This will really get her used to things she would normally be afraid of. I am sure in time she will be fine she is lucky to have such a caring Momma. Why did her first owner not socialize her? | Congrats on your new addition! My Oliver is a puppy mill dog, and he is very skittish and scared as well. I've had him since March 28th and I can say that the best things you can give him are patience and time. It takes them a while to realize that the bad things that happened in the past aren't going to happen again. Oliver took to me immediately, but no one else in my family. He still really dislikes my dad, but is making small strides - taking treats out of his hand, playing ball, etc. Just keep doing what you're doing. As much time with people and other dogs as possible. A month is still not a lot of time, it often can take 6 months or even over a year for a dog to let the bad go and truly realize that she's safe now and that you'll always protect her from the bad stuff. I honestly did not start seeing much progress in Oliver until around week 5. We just started with a personal trainer, and my hope is that that will help too - just him realizing I am the pack leader and seeing that I am not scared, I hope, will help him to see that he doesn't need to be scared either. Just keep loving her! Give her time to trust and realize that she's safe, happy, and loved. Congrats again! Charley is lucky to have you guys.
