| Yorkie stops walking out side Hello YT Family! Just recently my little furbaby Polo decided he doesn't want to walk out side anymore. He barks and barks and barks and is really excited to go out, but within the first 3-4 blocks...he decides to conk out on me and just sits on the sidewalk catching the breeze. I tug on his leesh a bit to get him to go and we walk a little more, but a few steps later he just sits down again. He is 20 month old healthy 3.5lb yorkie. The first couple times he did this, I thought i was funny, but now that he doesn't it all the time, I'm starting to get concerned. I now pick him up and walk him back to the house after a short walk. Has anyone had this issue? Last edited by LadyV; 05-21-2009 at 03:52 PM. |

Thor's Human Donating Member | It's pretty common for dogs to stall out, and there's no one reason why. Is it possible that something is scaring your guy, or he had a scary experience in the past? Does he always stop in the same place? There are a couple things to try; one, just carry him for a few blocks, and see if he's more interested in walking then. Thor does not like to walk for the sake of walking. I made this big effort to walk him first thing in the morning and last thing at night, and he was just not that into it. He only likes to walk if (1) he thinks he's going somewhere fun, like a park, or somewhere they give out dog treats; (2) if we're headed home; or (3) if we're somewhere new. A nice, regular walk around the neighborhood is not his thing.

| Reesie is a little over 2 and she's the same, excited to go for a walk but she slows down after 15 minutes. It's different out here in the country where there aren't any 'blocks' so we just walk around the yard, well..ten acre yard. She tries her best to keep up with her best buddy Cindy. Whatever Cindy does, Reesie has to do. Her little tongue starts to hang and I usually carry some water for her. Then we end up carrying Reesie. In her first 7 or 8 months she would zip out the door and race away. We could usually catch her next door 'cuz her little legs would give out and she'd splat on her tummy to rest. Had the neighbors laughing because they'd come out to try to help catch her. |

| Funny you should post this post this very day...Apple has been walking nicely w/me on our 20 minute, 1 mile walk, for several weeks now...I had to give her a tug now and then, and she seemed to have gotten it...I kept telling her this was a walk, not a sniff lol...But just this evening, she pulled the same stunt? She just didn't seem to want to walk, and I would pick her up and carry her, then put her down, and she'd walk a little more...I kept checking her to see if she had a twig or burr or something stuck (because that would stop her), and also check her harness (it has velcro, and I wondered if her hair was getting caught? I was real upset, but just came home...I'm hoping our morning walk goes back to normal...Will post tomorrow, after we go out...Sorry you're having the same issue, and I hope both our babies will get w/the program... | Winston generally loves his walks and he is totally concentrating on walking...not other people, animals, cars, noises...nothing will pull his attention from his "walk". But one day, a month or so ago he just stopped, and sat down, for no apparent reason. I picked him up, thinking maybe he wasn't feeling well and carried him home...he was fine at home and has been fine on his walks ever since. Don't know why or what got into him that day...I hope your baby starts enjoying his walks again too.

| O.K. Today...(morning) Well, Apple & I just got back from our morning walk, and all went well...I can only think that the sidewalks were still just too warm, yesterday evening...Maybe not too warm to touch, but heat rising off the concrete, and w/her being only a few inches from the ground, it may have been like a little heater under her belly, and it was still about 80 degrees outside...But I noticed you are from New York, and I don't think it's quite so hot up there, as we are down in S.E.Texas...Just wondering if you are walking her early in the a.m. when it's cool? Maybe with the warmer weather, there is more activity out and about and he is hearing a lot more noises and things too?
