Are male Yorkies just as good as females?

I hope this question doesn't sound to ignorant, but I wanted a female yorkie (I've always had female dogs) but had trouble finding one in my area so I have put a deposit on a male yorkie puppy. Can someone put my mind at ease, lol..people are telling me he will be constantly marking his territory inside because that's what males do!!! I can't imagine having to deal with this. Also can males be pee pad trained? I live on a top floor building, so going outside will not be that simple. Thank for any advice, Yorkies are the most beautiful little creatures ever!

I have a wonderful little male. He does mark outside, but he is completely (YAY!!!!) trained to use pads indoors.

Some people say males are more affectionate than the females. I don't have a female so I can't say, but my guy is definitely a love bug. The only drawback with males is that the clothes are not as cute.

Ooooh thank you for the response, that makes me feel better!! So your little guy is pee pad only? I know about the clothes..no fair! My friend has a female yorkie and her clothes are to cute for words! You're guy is adorable btw!

Thank you! I can't wait to see yours. My dog is indoors / outdoors. I also live in an apartment, and he came to me untrained, so I had the same issues you are considering.

I got Thor when he was 2 1/2, and he did mark indoors. I was able to train him out of it. He is neutered, so that may be why it was possible. I know people with un-altered males who do not mark indoors. Anyway, the sooner you have him neutered, the less likely he will be to mark at all.

You know you love your boy yorkie when you see him mark outside and you think it is the cutest thing ever.

I have a little boy, and he's pee pad trained, and never marks inside; he does love to lift his leg on walks. Joey has been fixed and if you don't neuter a male they will probably mark inside around the age of 8-9 months, once they start to mark, it's hard to stop, even if you neuter them at that point because the testosterone is already in the system. So neutering before 8-9 months is best. For those that don't neuter, belly bands are recommended, it's just a cloth that hold a pad to catch marking, it's not meant as a diaper for pee, it's better to house break them.

You're right the clothes are much cuter for a girls, but they do make some awfully cute boy shirts, sweaters, and I just love hoodies! Boys and girls can both wear the topknot, and they make lots of bows just for boys. You might find that your little boy is less moody than a female. I'm absolutely nuts about my little boy!

Yes you can use pee pads, or doggy litter boxes, and belly bands for marking. I like both males and females. They're all great! I was in the same situation, always having had female dogs, and then getting a male Yorkie. He was just as great though.

Hi I love our little male Tyke. I don't have a female either. But I know he hasn't been any trouble training outdoors or in. He will go on pads if he's shut up in the house for a long time, but when we're home he lets us know when he has to go outside.
We got him when he was 12 weeks old and he's going to be a year old in June. He's not neutered and he doesn't mark in my house.....thank goodness. But I haven't had any trouble with him. The only barking he does is when someone knocks on the door or drives up. He also barks if he hears someone comes in the front door and he don't see them. I like it because it's like giving me an alert to let me know someone is around.

so far he's a little angel and a joy to be around. I don't know what i would do if i didn't have him.

I am definitely happy about my decision to get a boy He is the most lovey dog I have ever met. He has only had one potty accident inside, and that was the first day I had him. He does mark outside, but he does not inside our house.

While there are a lot more cute girl clothes out there, I am still able to find TOO much cute stuff for Couver

The only thing is, if you do not get him fixed, he will most likely mark. I got Couver neutered at 6 months, and he is fine If you do not plan on getting him fixed, then I would not suggest you get him.

You will not regret your decision. Boys are known to be more lovey than girls, and I would have to agree with that.

Okay, here's my 2 cents. I know a lot of good little guys, I have one(I'm kind of patial to females). I got him at 5 1/2 mos and had him neutered the next day, he's great, hes also pee pad trained and stands and actually does better than the girls, when he goes outside, he also likes to lift his leg then. Now, the neutering doesn't always work, unless you get it done before he starts lifting his leg. My sons little yorkie was neutered at 5 1/2 mos. he started lifting his leg at 12 weeks, and to this day(almost 2 years) still does. I make them put a belly band(I bought) on him over here as he's always lifting his leg in my house. the pad in the belly band is soaked before he leaves. I probably would have rehomed him if he was mine, i can't handle that marking. good luck on whatever you decide. I would def. try and get him fixed before he lifts his leg though.

Moose came to us as a gift from our son! I was like A small boy dog???

Moose is the most loving furbutt we have ever had! We had him fixed early. He doesn't mark in the house at all. He is totally house trained for outside only. He will mark outside! And I have only seen his "tallywacker" out once! and he is 2 1/2 years old!

We got Mimi 11 months ago. She is loving, but feisty! And she MARKS outside all the time too....even lifting her leg!

I'm gonna say I think I will always have male dogs from now on ever since getting Jackson.
I've had female dogs (of other breeds) all my life and they've all been just SO female (a.k.a. bitchy! lol)
They would be love bugs one minute and then just go and do their own thing. They were definitely
more stubborn and harder to train. Jackson, my yorkie, was my first male dog ever and I got him
neutered at 6 mo. old and he has never marked indoors. He does lift his leg outdoors on trees and such.
Sometimes he squats to pee, and sometimes he lifts his leg. He's been the best dog I've ever had. Now,
it always depends. But males are known to be more loving and easier to train. They
are needier though so if you'd prefer to have a more independent dog, I'd go with a
girl.

It all depends. My girls aren't bitchy, except the 11 year old, but, that's only if she's being bugged. My little guy loves to be held, but doesn't like kisses, now, all my girls except one, love to be held and loved on. I don't think my male was an easier than my females to housebreak. I've always had all of them trained within about 1 month.
