| First heat I just was wondering about a yorkies first heat. How long should you expect it to last, the bleeding part. When should you start to worry? My mom's yorkie got her first heat and it just seems long to me, Stormy got hers and it passed and her is still bleeding a bit. We are starting to worry a bit. A book my mom read says it can last up to 6 weeks, this is going over 6 weeks now. |

YT 1000 Club Member | Before my daughters husky was fixed she'd stay in heat for at least 6 weeks. Seems like forever! I'm sure someone will know more then me but I'd call the vet and just ask. Can you imagine having to deal with that for so long???? Ug! Poor dogs!

| The heat should last about 3 weeks. The bleeding generally is over after 1 week. I would have her checked out by the vet.

| He didn't spay Stormy and my moms hasn't been spayed yet either. This is my mom's yorkie's first heat. She is 9 months old right now. She is still bleeding a bit and it's been a few weeks now. She is even used to wearing a diaper that the other night she went and brought my mom a diaper around bedtime. |

Thor's Human Donating Member | I see. Was that because Stormy is small? I don't know much about dog health , but I would have thought since she had to undergo surgery for her nose, that he would have spayed her as well. Are you planning to have the dogs spayed at some point?

I would of assumed the same, that he would of spayed her too but I don't know why he didn't think too. He told me when I picked her up that he would like to do it end of May. Well she is just about done her heat, her vulva is still a bit swollen, I want to make sure she is completely done and we will be doing a spay hopefully early June. My mom wasn't expecting her pup to go into heat so early. I don't know what my moms plans are, but I know she wanted to keep her options open incase she wanted to have pups AFTER she spoke with the vet about her pup and possible puppies in the future. She is trying to get a hold of the breeder and speak with her about the puppy and see what she has to say. She will be bringing her in tonight or tomorrow. | |

Thor's Human Donating Member | Good, I am glad you are getting her spayed. She's already been through so much in her little life, it's a relief she will not have the stress of pregnancy. For your mom's pup, I thought yorkies generally have their first heat around 7 months? I would definitely have expected her to have a heat at 9 months. Try to convince your mom to get her girl spayed too.
