| not getting much action over there... so i posted this in the health and diet section and it only got one response... which was to free feed, but i can't do that b/c of other animals, different foods, and a toddler that likes puppy food so anyway, its prob "illegal" to re-post this here (in yt land ) but i'm really curious for some opinions.... so here it is, and if it has to be deleted i understand why hey everyone, toby is 12 weeks old, eating blue buffalo, and has 1/3 cup per day split into 4 little meals. i am feeding him the 1/3 of a cup b/c that is what my vet recommended for his weight (2.4lbs) BUT he scarfs his little meals down so fast he doesn't even chew!! I have actually been hand feeding him kibble by kibble so he doesnt LITERALLY inhale his food soooo i thought maybe I should increase his food to 1/2 a cup. but then i thought, my big dog eats FIVE cups of food a day and she still eats like its her last meal too... so maybe dogs are just crazy eaters?? any advice? or anyone out there with a dog of similar weight, how much do you feed? also, i have been feeding him 4 times so he gets food every 5 hours or so, he has never had a problem eating, or had low sugar levels, so should i cut it back to 3 times per day?? or stick with the 4 til he gets a little older... so many questions!!! thank you Last edited by carlyn6884; 05-15-2009 at 01:24 PM. |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I'm no expert by any means and I do free feed. However, I can certainly see your problem with free feeding! If it were me, I'd still do the 4 feedings every day. Your puppy is still relatively young. In fact, many puppies are that age as they leave their birth home. I have seen these bowls in some of the pet online catalogs that are especially made for gulping dogs. (I'm not sure if it would help with a puppy but it might.) They have raised areas in the bowl so that the dog has to actually work a bit to get the food. (I know I didn't describe that well. I'll see if I can find a link after I post.) I think if you see this, you can probably rig something like it for your puppy. |

| I missed your thread -- there is a very simple and inexpensive way help slow your little one down with meals -- put a fairly large tennis ball in the bowl - one that will require Toby to nose it around to get to the kibble. |

YT 1000 Club Member | A vet told me once to lay it out flat like on a plate or cookie sheet. If it's not all mounded up they have to work a little bit harder to get the food. I also free feed but don't have other dogs in the house. I've heard some dogs live to eat and others eat to live. The ones that live to eat you can't really free feed obviously. As far as the amounts go I can't really say but I'd think that 1/2 cup split up 4x throughout the day doesn't seem like much for a puppy who's pretty active. I'm sure someone will know better then me on that one.

| I do what someone else said and put something large in the bowl. We did that with Chip when he was sick and got his chicken and rice, which he looooves cause he would literally choke on his food since he was eating so fast. We actually put his kong in his bowl and worked just fine. As far as amounts, I'm not sure. I fill up two regular sized bowls in the mornings for my dogs and they eat through the day. They are the "eat to live" dogs. I would think 1/3 of a cup is fine. He's just a little over 2 lbs so his stomach isn't that big. I'd wait until he's about 16 weeks or so to move him to 3 meals a day.

| thank you everyone he has such little bowls, but he also has little tennis balls so when i'm done posting i'm going to see if it will fit and still give him room to move it around enough to get any food it's amazing how many more responses i got in the general discussion area!! and toby is definately a live to eat dog, i 100% think if i tried to free feed which really isn't possible like i said, but if i did, his food would be gone for the day in 25 seconds thanks again!! i think we found a cure for the scarfing food, any other opinions on amount? i feel like the 1/3 is ok... but i dont want him to feel hungry ya know? |
