| Hi Everyone!I just joined today..Im a NEWBIE! Hi my name is Daisy,I am 19 years old and live in Miami,FL ... THE STORY OF HOW I BECAME OBSSESED WITH YORKSHIRE TERRIERS,WHY I WANT ONE AND HOW I FOUND THIS SITE: It all started when one day my friend told me she knew a person that was giving away puppies (for free!).They were Labrador and German shepherd breed.I really wanted one so so bad!Ive always wanted a dog but never had the opportunity. So I told my parents about it and they immediatelly thought I was crazy(unlike me,my parents are very ignorant about these certain things and arent open minded)....I begged and expained how much I wanted a dog and that not many people give away dogs for free. They replied NO.Their reason:The breed(german shepherd and labrador mix) grows to be really big in size and where will we have the dog,and because of my two cats.Which didnt make sense to me because we live in a house with a back yard and dogs can get along with cats if socialized at a young age....Im am a total animal lover and thought it was completely unfair to not let me have a puppy in the house that I would have plenty of time to take care of and give undivided attention to because I currently dont have a job or go to school. So I kept begging them for a couple of days and believe it or not I even cried alot and stressed about it so much.Specially knowing that some people own dogs and dont even take care of them properly or even abuse their pets! One day I asked my parents WELL WHAT IF ITS A SMALL DOG.Their reply YES. So I started researching and comparing dogs online (small breeds only) and ended up loving YORSHIRE TERRIERS.Not only because theyre so cute and adorable but I love theyre loving personality and intelligence.... Since then Ive been reading immense amount of articles online about the breed and even watchin videos on youtube about people training them or playing with them etc.I even bought this great magazine that says EVERYTHING about Yorkies(I read the entire magazine in just one day)...I just love Yorkies upbeat personality and look. Now that im more knowledgeable Ive decided its the right dog for me. But then I thought,WHERE WILL I BUY IT FROM AND CAN I AFFORD IT.I thought of puppy shops and went crazy searching online and found out it is a very bad idea and that its better to find a good reputable breeder. But theyre so expensive!Specially the so called TEACUP.Ive seen theyre price range up to $6000.To me its kind of ridiculous because your paying more for a teacup that is more prone to health problems and more fragile and expensive to care for..So Im still currently searching all over florida and nearby states for a good breeder but that isnt so expensive.... My parents and my boyfriend think Im crazy and that Im stressing too much.I constantly talk about Yorkies, their personality, theyre health problems, etc. But hey! To me is natural as an Animal and Dog lover.Or atleast I THINK so.... In the process of thousands of clicks I found this wonderful helpful website that I can share my obssesion and love for Yorkies with.Isnt that amazing! What are your opinion about my story. And SHOULD I BUY A DOG AT THE PET SHOP OR FROM BREEDER. Can someone please help or give me info about owning a dog for the first time.Owning a Yorkie, finding a good breeder with prices my parents can afford, about a Yorkie you own etc. OR SIMPLY JUST INTRODUCE YOURSELF.. ID LIKE TO GET TO KNOW SOME PEOPLE ON THIS SITE |

| Hi there. I understand how you feel. I am 23 and got Cash just after my 21st birthday. I am also an animal lover and my parents and friends think I am slightly crazy. I now have two yorkies (June is 13 weeks old tomorrow). I wouldn't change anything! Never buy from a pet store or a backyard breeder. You will simply pay more in the long run - on vet bills, surgeries, etc. Find a reputable breeder who understands your situation. They may be able to let you pay off the puppy over a period of time. I hope you don't mind me asking, but what are your plans for the future? You need to realize that yorkies live for about 15 years. You need to think where you will be during that time and if you move out on your own or start studying or working, what will you do with the dog? Simply because you aren't working or studying now, doesn't mean that you never will and you need to take this into consideration. I know that it is hard to want a yorkie so badly, but you need to make the best choice for yourself and your future dog. Also, who will pay for the food, accessories, vet bills, etc? Your parents aren't going to support you for the next 15 years and having a dog while studying is really difficult (believe me, I've been there). It isn't impossible, but it is really hard. I have to scrape by on a meager allowance and had to start working part-time too. Next year, I am starting to work and finding an apartment with a garden (or just a place where they allow pets) is very difficult. So, ask yourself: What are your plans for the future? How are you going to finance your dog? Will you be able to afford emergency vet care? What will you do with the dog once you move out of your parents' home? This is a huge decision to make and you need to look at it from all angles. Otherwise, your dog may end up in a shelter and you don't want that. Once you decide that you are, in fact, ready, buy from a reputable breeder! Good luck and welcome to YT!! Just by being on this forum, you have already done the best thing for your future yorkie!

| Whatever you do don't buy from a pet store. They are known to get their puppies from puppy mills. If you don't know what a puppy mills, please do a google search. I am an animal lover as well and seeing videos of puppy mills brings tears to my eyes. The humane association has a good video of a puppy mill raid. Also have you thought about adopting a dog. There are plenty of yorkies that you can find through petfinders.com. My dog was a rescue, and I love her to death. Wouldn't trade a million bucks for her. So please don't rule out rescues, they are so worth it. Last edited by yavenay; 05-14-2009 at 05:54 AM. |

| I did the exact same thing when I was looking for a yorkie. I was totally obsessed with them until I got my own. Now I am completely out control. If it wasn't for my cat.....I would probably have two yorkies by now. |

| welcome to YT! don't ever buy an animal from a pet store.(their dogs are from puppy mills) it doesn't matter what kind of animal really. it's never a good idea to buy an animal from the pet store. i am happy for you that your parents agreed to let you have a small dog. but there are a few things for you to consider given your age. i think someone already mentioned to you about moving out. i don't know what your future plans are. but if you are moving out of your parents house, going to college. it will be VERY difficult to have a dog. because you have to find an apartment that allows dogs, (usually apartments will charge you more to have a dog, where i live, the places that allow dogs, you have to pay $100 extra a month to have a dog, and also, you have to put a bigger deposit down) and between school and friends and partying, will you have enough time for your dog? i don't know what you want to do with your new puppy, but it can be kind of expensive. just to give you an idea. vet visits.($50 each time just for an appt. to talk to the vet, plus $ whatever service you need) shots. medicine/vitamins/food/toys. (depends on what you buy) puppy school. ($200) spay/neuter surgery ($600) emergency surgeries (milu broke her teeth, the surgery was $350) (but someone here had to pay $3,500 when their yorkie broke its leg), pet insurance (depends on the insurance plan) initial investment (dog crate, dog pen, leash, harness...etc.) anyways, that's not all of it, but just wanted to give you an idea of what possible costs there are associated with a dog. if your parents are going to help you pay for everything. then you should be ok. but i know that if i was 19, then i wouldn't be able to afford to have a dog. i've heard someone here (a younger person) say that they've saved up all the emergency funds before they got their dog, which i thought was a good idea. i don't want to discourage you, but i just want to let you know the points that maybe you have not considered yet. so you will be prepared when you make your decision. as for the price of the dog. i think it depends on the breeder you find and it also depends on your location. there are more breeders in some areas of the country, then that will make it easier for you to find a puppy. but if you do find a good breeder, they will probably ask you those $$$ questions as well, they will want to know how to plan to pay and care for the puppy if it gets sick. good luck to you! and feel free to ask any questions you have, there are a lot of knowledgeable members on this site!

| Welcome to YT, there is a lot of great info here. You might consider an older baby. One of the most often posted problems here is potty-training. Since you are still in your parents house this could become a large issue. I don't want to discourage you but want to point this out, potty training to pads or house-breaking can take months. Good luck to you, you sound like you'll be a great mom. |
