| Spaying Question Trixie is getting spayed on Friday. I'm a little nervous about it. I know it is probably best for her, but I also feel she is a dog and got her parts of her body for a reason... Anyway. The vet I am taking her to is keeping her overnight. But there won't be anybody there to monitor her while she is there during the night. They told me somebody checks up on the animals before they leave at 6 pm, somebody comes in at 9 pm and they'll check right away in the morning. What is your feeling on this? I feel that it if there isn't anybody to monitor her, I might as well take her home and monitor her myself. What is something happens during the night? |

| I totally agree with you about them being there all night. That is something that has always made me skittish about them being left overnight. I always had these thoughts that someone could break in and take them or there could be a fire or any number of things could happen...they never have, though. The only answer I can offer is to attempt to find a vet that will let you take your little one home that evening. There are some that do that. I see a number of people on here do that. The other thought I have on that is that I'm not certain that is the best thing for them. They are in a cage at the vet's and I wouldn't doubt that they are drugged to keep them still overnight, therefore they can't hurt themselves as they could possibly do at home. I'd like to see what others have to say. I was never able to bring any of mine home the same day, either. I will soon have to face this with Kacee. It's been 14 years since I have been through it, but I can still remember the tears in leaving Muffin.

| My sisters vet wanted to keep her pup overnight after being spayed and she told him no that she would gladly bring her back in the morning to be checked out, but she was not leaving her overnight. He knew that if he didn't agree she would go somewhere else. She picked her up that evening.

| I think if you schedule the surgery for early in the morning you should be able to pick her up in the afternoon. I wouldn't leave mine at the vet's with no one there. Too risky in my opinion and what is the purpose? It could be that they plan to do their sugeries in the afternnon and in that case I would find a vet that does them in the morning when they are fresher. I understand your concerns to about the dog "keeping all its parts". I have decided that, absent some other problems developing, I will not spay my female yorkies. I will not breed them but my males are neutered and there is no chance of pregnancy so I just feel they are too small to subject to major surgery for no reason. It is a personal decision and not an easy one. |

| It hardly makes sense for her to stay there if no one is actually going to be there in my opinion. When all of my dogs were spayed or neutered they were dropped in the morning and picked up in the late afternoon and they did fine at home and I am sure they were more comfortable being in the comforts of their home versus some cage in a strange place. If my vet would have wanted them to stay I would have found a different vet because I know the majority go home the same day.

| Gioia was spayed in the morning and returned home in the evening . With the new surgery methods , I don't see why peoples are so concern about letting their dogs or bitches intact when they don't intend to breed them . |

| I took Mollie in yesterday for what I thought was going to be a tooth extraction and possible cleaning. The vet called a few hours later and told me Mollie had possible pyometria(sp) she start bleeding a little over the weekend. So they kept her overnight with some antiobotics IV's and they are going to do her procedure this morning spaying & tooth extraction. But, this vets office is an emergency clinic from 7pm to 7am so I didn't mind leaving her as much because I knew there would be someone there with her all the time. The doctor is doing the procedure early enough in the day that I should be able to pick her up this afternoon. This is the second dog that she has spayed for me, and I was able to pick up my Lab later on in the afternoon. She believes if it's possible for the animal to go home that same day that it is better for them to be at home with their families. Sorry this is so long. Good luck with your spaying, I would just address my concerns to the vet and tell them what you would rather do and see what they say. You can always take her somewhere else that would let you bring her home that afternoon to be with you.

| I, too, have made the appoitment for our two to get spayed - they will be going in next Wednesday, the 21st. Our vet said to have them there by 7:15 am & they should be ready to go home that evening around 6:00 pm. I'm not sure that I could handle leaving them somewhere for several hours unmonitored - but that's just me! |

| Just my thoughts - You are definitely doing the right thing by having Trixie spayed. I did a lot of research and weighed the pros and cons. After I read that females that aren't spayed and won't be bred have a much higher risk of mammary and ovarian cancer - that made up my mind. If you and your vet feel that Trixie is physically able to handle the procedure - you're doing the best for her. I can't really comment on leaving her overnight, though. When Maddie will be fixed in October, my vet's office has Vet Tech's that are there overnight to montior. Hope all goes well and you and Trixie will be in my thoughts!
