| What should I do??? My husband and I are planning a 3 day trip on the weekend of July 4th to Tokyo. The thing I am torn about is do I leave Marley with a friend or place her in the kennel on base ( we live on a military installation ). Here is what is going through my mind. If I put her in the kennel, then I know that she won't get hurt by someone stepping on her because they arent used to having a yorkie at their feet all the time. I just think ( and call me crazy ) that it would be safer for her. I can pay the kennel here 6 dollars extra a day to take her out and play with her for 15 minutes 2X a day. I am just worried that she will be depressed and won't eat or something. If i leave her with a friend then I am worried that she will get stepped on or she will potty in there house and they will get pi$$ed. I don't mind when she has accidents in my house bc i love her. But other people really dont appreciate that kind of stuff. Also, I don't know anyone without kids, I dont want her in a house with children because she is so tiny and I don't know how parent their children on how to be around animals. GaHHh this is killing me. I could ask someone to come to the house to check onher but I don't trust anyone at work or that I know to come every 4 hours to let her out and I don't know anyone who would house sit. Any advice? I am going nutso as I type, and my DH is a little peeved at me now because I told him I might not go.

| I think you sound just like me. I won't leave Mia with anyone but a breeder friend of mine. I won't even leave her at home with my hubbie or boys. I think if you spoke with the kennel and explained your concerns. Maybe if you bring special snacks or baby food chicken to mix with her kibble, she would not be able to resist eating. I also would call them a couple times a day to check in with how she is doing. My girl can not resist chicken. Do you leave her home alone when you go to work? She may do better than you think? Or....stay home?? |

| Yes I leave her home alone while my Dh and I work. But I come home for lunch to let her out and love on her for a while. Then go back to work and come home for the evening. I keep her in her really big cage with food, water, big bed and blankey most of the time when we are gone for more than a few hours. She has just recently started to get free reign of the house while we are away.

| I would definitely check into the kennels in your area and leave Marley with one of them. Preferably one with a webcam then you can check on your baby! Ask around for recommendations for kennels and definitely go check it out yourself and ask lots of questions. Also, ask Marley's vet for his opinion, he should also know how Marley might feel and could be contacted while you're out of town for any concerns. Kennels are suppose to be professionals in dog sitting and should keep your baby happy and safe. I'm sure yorkies in kennels get lots of attention, who can resist them? :^)

| gosh, i know how you feel. i can't leave my baby either. well, do you know anyone who has a small friendly dog? it would be wonderful if you can find someone like that to watch your doggie for you while you are away. since they already know to be careful to not step on the tiny dogs and they might also know about finicky eating habits of small dogs. it would be a good idea to start having play dates with that dog, so that your dog and their dog can get to know each other and become friends before hand. i think that would be the best way if it is possible.

| kennel or close friend with small dog experience YT if small, like mine (1.6Kgs & 3.2Kgs) can be a bit demanding/fragile. Burdening someone with the care who is not very familiar with them is a tall order. A kennel for a few days should not be a big deal. Maybe, safer, barring kennel cough etc..., in since should be experienced at handling animals. However, if u have a friend with a small dog friendly environment, including #1 incidents, such as their own small dog, then that should be safe too and much nicer stay for your companion. In general, would take kennel over home with small children e.g. < = 6yrs, of course if household has similar dogs then much less of a risk since kids more aware of delicateness as well as parents(supervision). Coincidentally, I now live in Tokyo and have similar situation planning a trip to U.S. for 1-2weeks. Would like to bring the dogs, but a lot of admin required. We moved from Bangkok recently and cleared Japan customs in 30mins, but coordinated in advance(40days appointment), then faxed all paper-work, called/discussed status etc... For your 3 day trip, bringing dog would be a lot of effort and restrict your excursion options. As others have noted, we left a worn shirt, for smell/comfort, behind when we had to leave one of our boyz at Vet for week(twice), much like a kennel, except the extra torture of daily needles and other screeming pets. Scooby a picky light eater at home, found his appetite b4 long at Vet when clear our hand feeding not available. Enjoy your trip. -tk |

Many people have offered to look after my Tia, but they are not experienced around such tiny dogs.Ive taken the first step and had her kennel cough vaccine done and have checked out the kennels ,its not ideal but she will be safe.Good luck with your decision.

| I def. understand how you feel. We have a kennel by us that seems so great. We are possibly planning a trip in Oct. I was also worried how Coco will be and if she would eat so I've brought her to the kennel twice so far. They offer daycare so I did that first for a day to see how she would be, and actually last Sat. she spent her first night there to get used to that. They had a webcame room for $5 extra so I did that. We didn't go anywhere, she just spent the night. Next I will try her for a weekend. I don't know if all kennels are the same , but I would make sure they have someone there overnight and ask what they do if they are sick and stuff. They tell me Coco had a great time, I hope she did. I'm hoping the more I do it before we leave then she will look at it as a fun place instead of "where did mom go?" |

| The kennel would be my choice because people who do not have very small dogs don't watch every step they take. At least at the kennel, Marley won't be stepped on. As far as eating, he probably will not each much when you are gone. Good luck with your decision and hope you enjoy your trip. I understand your stress but I have not had to leave mine yet. |

| There's no way you can't take your dog with you? I'd check out the kennel really well. Make certain it is clean, and they handle the animals safely. I think that this will be your best solution. If your unable to have anybody to come over to your home and care for your dog while gone.

| OK, Im going to be the odd one here... I was going to leave Bella in the kennel when we go on vacation this summer, but after going and talking to them and seeing how they keep them I decided I would find someone to watch her. The only take them out 3x's a day for 15 min each. They leave at 6 at night come back in the morning. I just thought it would be too much for Bella. She is used to having people around her all the time, and being by herself all day was not what I wanted. I got lucky....a guy at my husbands shop, his wife was wanting a yorkie and they found one here on base someone was selling. They offered to keep Bella for the month we are gone. We are keeping her yorkie for 2 weeks this month. So it worked out for us. They do not have kids, but even if they did, I would still feel better about leaving her with them rather than the kennel here on base. JMO I think she would be better off staying with one of your friends with or without kids. |
