Default Yorkies = Big Dog in a Little Package

Hi Everyone,

I'm writing a short piece for a new Yorkshire Terriers magazine about how Yorkies, despite being little and looking cute, act like they are big dogs because of their bravery, determination and toughness.

Does your little Yorkie act like a big dog? Please feel free to share with me stories and examples of your Yorkie, so I can get a feel for this breed! Thanks!

Let me start off by saying that Shiloh has no idea that he is a five pound Yorkie, cause he definitely has the heart of a lion lol. He has what my family and I call "inner vicious" hehe. Shiloh is extremely protective of not only myself but my two children as well.

So I was in my fenced in back yard trying to do some yard work after a big storm we just had. My children and Shiloh were outside "helping" (or just running around playing ). One of my neighbors whose back yard isn't fenced in has a very large dog, I'm not sure of the breed but suffice to say he weighs at least 150+ lbs. When they take him outside they put him on one of those chains that has a stake into the ground. He always threateningly growls and barks at anyone in our yard. Shiloh always goes crazy barking and growling back at him, even throwing his body against the chain link fence like he is trying to break it down. Shiloh will even tug at our clothes to try to pull us away from the fence.

Anyways, somehow the gate to my backyard got left open and before I knew it Shiloh was out of the gate and running full on at the other dog. I started screaming, and ran after him cause I knew if the other dog got to him he could easily hurt him very badly and possibly kill him. The neighbor's dog was chained up and was pulling all his weight trying to reach Shiloh. They were literally inches apart, nose to nose barking, growling, snarling at each other. But luckily Shiloh was smart enough to know that as long as he stood just far enough back he couldn't reach him due to the chain.

Amongst the commotion my neighbors ran out and restrained their dog and I snatched Shiloh up and rushed him back into the safety of our back yard. For the rest of the day he pranced around like he was so proud of himself for telling him off! It was like he was thinking "I sure gave him a piece of my mind. No one barks or growls at MY family!!" lol.

My Bailey acts like she is the King of all dogs..lol al her good friends are all big dogs she gets along with them so much better since she thinks she is just like them...she is not Afraid of anything!! that gets her in trouble sometimes though. She will try to play with a big dog and they will play back and well some of them don't know how to be gentle. I want to say good luck on your piece

Default see new thread on pg 2 under Yorkie thinks shes a BIG dog!

Yorkie thinks she's a BIG dog!

Anyone have a "Rottwieler" in a "Yorkie suit"?

My little Yorkie girl, CutiePie, who weighs in at a hefty 2.5 lbs., thinks she's a Rottweiler!! Thank heaven for leashes!
I was out the other day, feeding our horses when Cutie "discovered" the "intruders"! What a hoot...lmao! Our very large quarter horse, Treasure, put his nose down to the bottom of the fence to say "Hi there" and little Miss CutiePie turned into Kudjo! She was growling and barking so ferociuosly that she was actually bouncing up & down! Treasure just gave her a look as if to say "how rude" and walked away. I couldn't stop laughing!! I had to pick her up and carry her back in as she refused to "just walk away"! Gotta love our Yorkies...fierce protectors that they are...

Default Genghis Silly puppy

Genghis thinks he is a big dog for sure. At the dog parks he always finds the largest dog there and tries to tell them he's bigger. He loves playing with my friends gentle Boxer Gator. Attached is a photo for reference.

OMG - That picture of Genghis is too funny! I'm sitting here in stitches. The big dog looks like he's saying - what the Heck is that thing stuck to my leg??????

Thanks for sharing!

My 3.5 lb yorkie Jack also thinks he is a huge dog. We were on our back porch (completely fenced with a xpen) when this giant neighbor dog George (about 90 lbs) came to look at the gang. Jack jumped up and grabbed George's jowls. He hung on while George just sat there. It was so funny. I was very lucky George was gentle. I had to pull Jack off then George just walked away.

I'm sure Lucy has been encouraged into thinking she's a big dog because of some of the nicknames my DH gives her: 'Ratweiler' and 'Gerbil Shepherd'.

She's absolutely fearless, and will approach HUGE dogs to say hello, assuming the submissive "I'm so lovely you couldn't possibly want to hurt me" position - without even considering that she might be presenting herself as a meal on a plate!

Whenever people walk in to our apartment that is new to Wrigley, I always warn them that Wrigley thinks he is a German Shep. He will do his little pretend growl --- its weird, I've heard his real growl and this is a different one - then of course he calms down as soon as they give them attention. That's what he wants, he doesn't care about alerting us - he wants to alert them that he is there and they should probably say hi to him.

He certainly always wants to play with the biggest dogs in the dog park. One time we were at a festival and there was a police on horseback.... we had to hold him back and pick him up because he wanted to play with the horse!

This is so funny!!
I went to fisit some friends for two days yesterday. They hav a huge Germ shep, Untrained and wild!!
For the two days i kept my little one in the house seeing as the big dog growls at him.
This morning very early i thought i will quickly take pup out for a pee before monster wakes up....
I turned around for a second to see my baby is gone!!!!
As i ran looking for him, i found them both, my little one chasing and barking extremely as the monstrous dog ran away with his tail tucked
in !
Very proud to see that i picked him up realising this could have been a disaster!!
Yorkies could be in danger due to their fiesty personalities!!

Proud owner os a pit bull hearted yorkie!!
