| Rescue gone terribly wrong... I work with a rescue in my area to get dogs that are in danger of being euthanized out of the shelters... The lady that runs the shelter called me the other day, and asked if I could pick up a momma pit and her 13 (YES thirteen) babies. She wanted me to keep them overnight and then transport them the next day to a city where she could meet me and pick them up. I told her that I live in an apartment, and I would get in trouble if I brought 14 dogs there... especially pit bulls, who are not allowed here anyways. So I called up a friend to see if they could stay in her bathroom for the night, and I would pick them up the next morning to transport them. She, of course said yes, and said to bring them on over. I told her that the momma was cat agressive and to keep her small dogs away from her... So I dropped them off while she was in town, and I locked them in the bathroom and they were completely fine... About an hour later, she texts me to tell me that the dog had attacked her chi I was at the grocery store, so I rushed over asap, to go be with her. The chi was and lying on her back, her tongue out... just in complete and utter shock. My friend said she had done this before when a stray dog attacked her, and she was completely fine afterwards. I was really worried, but because she was so confident, I just pet her and stayed there a while. After I left, she called me to tell me that her dog had died.... I immediately went to the emergency vet where she was and bawled my eyes out. I was responsible for her dog's death. This dog was her life... I feel so guilty, and my heart is heavy. I don't know what to do. I have thought about getting her another chi eventually, but I don't know when to bring it up. I talked to her husband last night, and he said that he might find a way to talk about it with her. I just want to do something to make it somewhat better.... I know no other dog is going to replace her Tink, but I feel so guilt ridden. She says it's not my fault, but I feel that it is. The lady that owns the rescue told me she has a doxie/chi cross in another rescue that they could give to me. I just don't know... Here he is... I know it's too early, but I hope to eventually find her a new baby if she will let me chiweenie puppy - Tri-Cities (WA) Dogs & Puppies For Sale - Kijiji Tri-Cities (WA), Washington What does everyone think?

| Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry! That's horrible. I'm sorry you're going through this. You warned her about the dog though, and she knew he was not good with other dogs/cats. How did the Chi get near the Pit? What an awful situation. I would get another dog if she WANTS one and is ready for one. But not right away. I would give it a while.

Donating YT 10K Club Member | I understand why you feel responsible...but you have to remember she had the ultimate responsiblity of keeping them seperated. This isn't necessarily related to the bred...the dog had puppies. They will attack other dogs in the presence of their puppies. It's likely her chi died from shock. I'm sure your friend feels horrible guilt herself. Personally I would not get her another...until she's ready. I'd apologize...and let her know when the time comes...you'd like to get her one.

| Omygoodness what a terrible thing to have happen! I'm so sorry for that poor baby, for the pain your going through and for the pain the own is going through! That's a tough situation to be in! I think right now you want to make a bad situation right, but right now I think she may just need time. Maybe just wait and see what her husband says after he talks to her. Some people need another dog to help heal the pain of the loss, fill the whole that has been left, while others are passionate about not getting another dog because they feel it's replacing what they just lost. It's a touchy situation. I would tread cautiously with this particular issue... Hope this helps... Hugs!

| I am so sorry ~ this is just terrible...I feel so bad for you and your friend You guys were just trying to do a good thing.... How did the Momma get out of the bathroom. And did she get bit or was she in complete shock Have the 14 dogs been transported already? How old was Tink? I am thinking that you should wait and talk to the husband more first and then your friend about a new dog |

| How awful! Here you (and her) are doing such a good thing by helping these 14 dogs, and it ends in tragedy. It is in no way your fault though. This is the last thing that either of you would have wanted to happen. It was an accident. Hopefully after your friend has some time to heal, she will allow you to find her a new little furbaby to love. Big Hugs to both you and your friend.

| How horrible for this to have happened. If the pit was locked in the bathroom with the puppies how did it get out and attack her chi? This is just so sad.

Yes, I transported the dogs yesterday and that is when the lady that owns the rescue offered to help her find a chi. I know that I should give it some time... I'm going to wait to see what she says to her husband. I think Tink was around 7-9? I am not sure...

| Thanks for the responses everyone! I really appreciate everyone's input and advice. I cannot imagine what she went through and I just keep thinking about 'what if it happened to my Couver?' I would not be able to move on... Thanks again everyone...

| What a very sad story. Knowing the pit was cat aggressive is amazing to me that she allowed the dog to be off leash knowing she had a chi who could possibly be taken for a cat due to it's size. What a shame for all involved. R.I.P. little one. I would wait until she is ready for another at which time you could possibly replace her lost pet. |

I don't know why this has happened, but it did, and now this must be a lesson to be learned ~ for you and she and for us too! When you are in rescue, you want to save them all, and that's a great thing...but...sometimes, as hard as it is, sometimes, we just have to say no ~ I hope in time you will be able to feel no guilt, as this isn't your fault. You have a good heart, a good helping heart I think you need to let your friend grieve a little bit. Being that Tink was at least 7 y/o - there's a lot of memories and long time of love involved. Let her husband feel her out about it. (also...if it were me, I'd want to be involved with the "picking" of my next dog ) | |

| I'm sorry this has happened to that poor thing. I am involved with rescue and also a big animal lover. I do not condem the Pit Bulls based on their breed but in my opinion this particular Pit should be put down. Some may not agree with this but I do not think there is ANYWAY for this particular Pit to be fully trusted in anyone's home. Who can say that this won't be a child next. I hope that your rescue seriously considers this. Elaine |
