| What should I do? I just got hired at an awesome preschool, but at least until the fall, my bf and I will both be working the day shift. Neither of us will be able to come home on our lunch breaks, and I hate leaving Kya alone for that long! It's easy to shut her off in the kitchen, but I'm worried about her getting lonely! At our apartment we can only have 1 dog, but we can get a cat. What do you guys think? Thanks in advance! |

| I think she'll sleep most of the time. Make sure she's safe, has a comfortable bed, potty place, safe chew toys, food, & water.

| We do all those things, but whenvever we come home she acts like she's been traumatized, and she tries to tear things up (for example, a 3 inch chunk of carpet ). I'm just wondering if we maybe got her a playmate she would be happier at home without us there. |

| She gets quite a bit! We always try to wear her out before we leave. |

| Is there an area where you can gate her off without carpet? Where she will have enough room not to feel confined but where she can do any harm. Do you maybe know someone that can come a check on her once a day in the beginning? |

| Sounds like to me she is going through separation anxiety. I would try to start out slowly by training her, and getting her use to the idea of you being away from her. Leave her for short periods of time . If you have a video camera , set it up so you can see exactly what she's doing when your away. Confine her to a smaller area. give her comfort toys that are safe . She needs to be trained . Since your not starting your new job until the fall their is time to work with her. Bringing a new animal may not be the right thing, because they may not get along, or there may not be enough time for them to get use to each other before you both have to start working. Jmo.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Congratulations on the new job! Have you tried leaving a tv or radio on in the apartment? I agree with the poster who said she probably sleeps most of the day. However, my guess is the action after you get home is her way of telling you she is not a happy camper that you left her. We seldom leave ours but when we do come back she pouts and literally turns her back on us when we try to engage her. She has to give us the cold shoulder about an hour and then she warms back up to us. Personally, I can see getting her a playmate if you are there for them to get to know each other, etc. but bringing one in right now may make her even more insecure (in my opinion). I'd wait until a vacation break or something to get the new pet acclimated to the household before leaving them to go to work. |

| I think that you have already been given some great advice about getting ready for when you will both be gone all day. The idea of having a playmate around for her is great, however I don't think you will get the same type of interaction that you are looking for with a cat and dog.
