Cry I had a Big Scare with Gucci Yesterday & now I am Baffled...Ideas anyone?

Gucci had thrown up on Monday evening, he was still eating and drinking fine.

On Tuesday he threw up in the early morning and went about his day, He ate, drank and played. About 9 p.m he threw up again, and then he was fine AGAIN. I was then starting to get a lil worried but not so worried that I didn't think it would pass.

At about 12:30 or 1:00 the next day (yesterday) Gucci started violently vomiting .. every 30 seconds or so. It was all Yellow Frothy Bile, by the 3rd incident I got us ready to go the vet. I rushed him there and cried the whole way because he threw up about 14 times on our way there. His entire crate was soaked with yellow bile and I was so terrified for him.

We got to the vet, they freaked out because he was vomiting so much. They took him back and treated him as an emergency with all other patients on hold. They began bloodwork to check his levels and everything and after reviewing that and seeing everything was normal, they went on to do X-Rays and see if he had an obstruction. He had... GET THIS... NOTHING! WOW ... The vet was sure she would see something there.. At this point, he had been cleaned up and everything and given fluids under the Skin, a Cerenia injection and another injection for the intestinal upset.

The only thing the vet saw on the X-ray was that he has Perfect healthy hips, knees and legs and some gas pockets in his tummy. She said he may have gastro upset from something, or he may have gotten into something that is not life threatening but making him pretty sick. She didn't suspect parvo because he's fully vaccinated and 8.5 months and he was barking and somewhat "alive" still. We knew it was a "possibility" but didn't test for it because she said if he did have it, it wasn't going to be bad enough as he would have been much worse off than he was. Seeing it was in his 3rd day and he was obviously at his worse.

$319.00 out of my Rent later... I was home with Gucci and his new Zanie baby the vet gave him and he was sad, tired, and laying in bed while I sat there and worried. She sent him home with meds for vomiting and some gastrointestinal medication and told me to feed him cottage cheese and white rice or chicken and white rice.

I just don't know what else to do, Liver, Pancreas and all that was normal. White blood cells/Normal Red/Normal... I just don't understand. He was throwing up so much I thought he would die on the way there (20 minutes) It was the worst 20 minutes of my life!

I am not even worried about my rent, I am just worried about my baby bear. It was just crazy how he started vomiting like wild so suddenly.
Even the vet was baffled, she thought for sure he was poisened or had an obstruction that was at it's worst.

There were NO OTHER SYMPTOMS.. he did jump out of bed and Yelp suddenly yesterday morning as if he was in some pain.. his stomach was hard not soft like it is today. He had a bowel during all this and also Peed on himself in his crate from vomiting so much . I am just so confused..what could this have been?

Has anything changed in your home? New Cleaner or house hold product that was used that he might have licked something? Did you open a new bag of food or treats for him I know in the moment it is very hard to think of things but now that you are home maybe you can thing of what has gone on in the house over the week and maybe come up with something.

Unless it recurs which will result in additional testing...you're likely to never know the answer.

Some interesting info here...

The only thing that had happened that was out of the ordinary was that he had ate some "stuff" from the ground (it was lint from the dryer, cedar chips, and maybe some dust that my daughter forgot to get with the dustpan. I wonder if he may have gotten some solvent from our the grout that was set into the tile from the doortrack in the kitchen? Because I didn't vaccuum that area out and had totally forgotten about it and he was snooping over there

See, Gucci is gated off with me at all times. Where I am, he is and we are both gated into a room with the X-Pen gates. I always clean the room before gating us into it. The floors are swept and mopped or vaccumed. We were in the kitchen and dining area, most of the days before he got sick or my bedroom or on the couch together. He isn't allowed to just "roam" yet, we are transitioning into that.

Other than that, no cleaners or anything new in the home.

Animal Smiley 049

I had a similar experience when Buddy was 10mos old.
He could not stop vomiting and pooping. Both had blood in it. This was 2 am
and I was frantic! He continued to vomit for the next two days off and on
even being hydrated at the animal hospital. He was there for four days.
The only thing they could find, after a lower GI series, was tiny fragments
in his lower intestine which were not passing. We're guessing it was from the
nylabones he was chewing. He chewed them constantly. It's the only
thing that made sence.
I hope your little one will be fine given time to recoup.
I know how scared you must have been. It's really hard watching
them throw up and not being able to stop it.

My guess would be the "Stuff" I would just watch him very carefully like I am sure you are and at the slightest sign run him back over to the Vet. Sometimes just like us they just don't feel right for some reason, unfortunately they can not speak to us to let us know what it going on and because they are so small we worry more than most. I hope he feels better very soon and this was just one of those things never to be repeated again.

Marcerella02 - His vet is one of , if not the best in our area, so I don't think a second opinion is going to help me much in this area. She is very thorough and I trust her completely.. she did full blood panels and checked for liver, pancreas and kidney problems but found nothing. She was just as baffled as I was if not moreso because she's a vet and felt she should KNOW what was wrong.

I still wonder if it were a Strain of Parvo that just didn't get bad because he had been fully vaccinated as he didn't eat a drop nor drink a drop that 3rd day and that's a tell tale sign. The only thing that threw me off was the yelp he made like his tummy was in pain.. I hope it doesn't happen again, that is my biggest fear If it does I am sure she will be referring us elsewhere. Thanks so much for your reply... I appreciate all the input!

ARCHIE - You must have been terrified, if it were blood I would have totally freaked. It was the worst drive of my life and I just knew he was going to pass out, die or start siezures any second. It was so scary. Weird thing was and even the vet thought it was weird.. is that he was still somewhat SPUNKY, barking at people .. trying to run out of his soft crate and rolling over on his tummy when he saw me that was why she just "knew" it was an obstruction of some sort. Since there were no signs of really bad illness besides the fact that he was vomiting his life away and a tiny bit tired (most likely due to the vomiting).

I know I will probably never know.. but it helps to hear of others that have had similar situations occur at random or maybe someone has had the same symptoms and got a diagnosis you never know.

Has he had a fever at all? Are his stools solid or loose? How frequent? Any sign of blood in his stool-it would look black and tarry if its from something internal. It may be that he ate something and has passed it through his system but it scraped something along the way. He may have also vomitted up something that was obstructing him so his system just has to get back to normal. If he is having explosive diarrhea, the vet may need to check for giardia.

Keep him hydrated; keep a watch on his belly-a hard belly is not right. Probiotic yogurt is great after a belly upset. My little guy lies to lie on a magic bag when he has a tummy ache.

Keep us posted.

his stool is a bit softer today but still formed, yesterday and the previous days it was normal. It is normal in color etc. and we had a full fecal done yesterday to rule out Giardia and Coccidia. So it's not that.. But I am with out on the maybe he ate something .. maybe something slightly toxic or maybe something that was obstructed but came up in that whole episode .

He seems to be getting back to normal today, he's still not drinking but he has interest in food. He goes back for more fluids this evening if he hasn't drank on his own.

Sorry to hear of your baby's sudden (strange) illness. Were the cedar chips perhaps treated with some kind of pesticide? I hope Gucci is already feeling much better.

What is a magic bag that an earlier poster mentioned? I'm not familiar with that term/item. Thanks...

Poor baby and poor you! This is the time when I really wish they could talk. Just tell me what is wrong and I will fix it!! It is so frustrating to "not know" so you can prevent another incident. On a lighter note I am so glad to hear all his tests came back normal. That is the silver lining.

Sorry to hear that. The only experience I had with one of mine with that extensive sudden vomiting was when Pixie chewed a silca pack that comes in new shoes and purses. She couldn't stop throwing up for about 2 hours and they treated her at the ER hospital and she was better the next day, so it sounds like it could be something she ate. Hope Gucci makes a full recovery.
