| Breeders vs. Brokers??????? ok.....I just purchased my first AKC Puppy. Mia Rose (MIMI). We absolutely are in love with her. I thought I did my homework. I took weeks to weed through all of the scams and the links telling me "Don't buy from a backyard breeder," and all of the emails from the missionaries in Africa. (Which was really weird) I placed an ad looking for a yorkie, I specifically said NO out of state. I had heard that small dogs get bad health problems and can die when flying. I did not want to place any dog in jeopardy. We finally found a local person. I thought the puppy was local. When we saw her it was (of course) love at first site. I asked for the AKC papers he said he would send them to me. When I got the papers I noticed the Breeder was from out of state. When I contacted her to see pictures of the Dam and the Sire, she said she retired them and has no pictures. Mia was just born on December 26,2008. Any way, I am assuming the gentleman was the Broker for the breeder? Is this normal activity. Just wondering for any future references. Thanks |

| Yes that sounds like a broker. It is more common to have one if you buy over the internet

| So sorry...You did sort good, not falling for those crazy scams and avoiding BYB - Unfortunately, you purchased from a broker, who in turn either purchases in bulk from puppymills or BYBs |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | If at least the dam isn't on the premises...consider that a red flag.

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Because the puppies are likely from a broker not a breeder. Beyond that...I want to see what the sire and dam look like along with their personalities.

| IMO a reputable breeder has the mom there with her puppies. If the mom isn't there, then where the heck is she?? Make sense?

| Sooo...??? I hate to raise any concerns but if puppies come from brokers.....Could there be a possibility that the puppy isnt actually AKC since we dont know where the parents are at? I mean she could have papers but doesnt mean the dog came from those parent right? |

| I thought about that. I have papers from America's Pet registry. I guess they are the same as the American Kennel Club. I didn't realize this. They are each others competition. I called and the registration number that I have is valid...Not that it really makesa difference if she is registered or not. I just want a purebred. So I know exactly what her temperment will be and what she is going to look like. |

| I also have the registration numbers for the dam and the sire. So I guess it's on the up and up. But I just don't understand why they don't include a picture or more information on the parents? like temperment, coloring so on and so forth. |

| The AKC is the only registry I feel comfortable with. They register pure breds only no mixes. The other registries register mixes

| America's Pet Registry is a junk registry. It was specifically formed to support the retail pet industry, puppymills, brokers and pet shops, and to provide "papers" to make the buyer think they are getting a quality dog. You can read in their FAQ's their intent to support the retail pet industry: America's Pet Registry - FAQs |
