| Pee Pads and going outside? Hi My name is Debbie and I have a 11wk old yorkie. I wanted to train her to go outside but also use her pads whenever she wanted. She is peeing in the house sometimes on the pads but also other places she shouldnt. Do you thnink I am confusing her. What would be the best way to handle this? Thanks |

| Are you letting her have free run of the house? I have a 9 month old, a 3 month old and a 10 week old and I only allow them in two rooms during the day. One of those is my home office where I'm at all day and the other is the bathroom where their potty pads are. I put up a baby gate in the hallway and close the doors to all the other rooms. They are not 100% yet, but they are doing really well. If I let them have the run of the whole house and can't keep my eyes on them every second, they will definitely go wherever.

YT 2000 Club Member | some people on here have had sucess doing both. I however, did not. Tucker started out pee pad trained at the breeders, so I tried it at home. He was the first dog that we tried using the pads with. Didnt work. He did great for the first few weeks, then he started going all over my house so when he was almost 4 months old, I started taking him outside. It was alot of work and alot of accidents but at 6 months old, he started going to the door on his own and at 7 months old he is completely trained and hasnt had an accident in the house in over a month. Which ever you decided to choose be consistant, use lots of praise and treats!! Good luck!!

| I use a litter box that has grass in it from Rascal Dog Litter Box - Home . Cookie will go both in her litter box and outside if I take her outside but she will not ask to go out to potty. I still limit her roaming area to a one or two room area where I can see her at all times. She is 6 months old but I have only have her about 3 months and we have only been using the litter box for a little over a month. She still has a few accidents but very very few.

| We have given Susie more freedom than we should in the house. Is it possible to take her out as often as we can and also keep the pads out for her in case she has to go, would that confuse her? |

| I think it confuses dogs when you allow them to do both. Punkin is outside potty trained and will tell us when she needs to go. I, personally, do not like the thought of pee pads and allowing a dog to go inside the house. I understand why some people do it (especially if you live on the 25th floor of a high rise), but if you're home all day with her I don't see why you'd need to use the pee pads. Punkin has free reign of the house as long as we're home. She spends most of her time right next to me anyway. When we're not home she happily waits in her crate and is excited when we get home. My suggestion, choose one or the other and stick with it! |

| We do both peepads and outdoors. First we pad trained, then I started taking her outside too. So far it hasn't confused Missy, she's 8 months old.

| we have a cat flap all 3 of ours are garden toileting of their own free will.. but when our 9 month old baby got ill she used her pads indoors with no prompting at all i think as long as you get them pad trained they will remember how to use the pads .. she should carry on using the pads for as long as you have them available for her and shouldn't confuse her ..give loads of praise when she relieves herself out doors .. in time she will learn to hold onto it until you take her outside |

| My Yorkie does both. My dog goes potty on the washable pads in my closet, and he goes potty in my backyard. It took me longer to potty train Josh, because I taught him to do both. I wanted to make sure he could go potty at inconvenient times like during the night, bad weather, and when I am not home. I taught my dog to do both by going through a systematic process. I taught my Yorkie to use the washable pads first. Ten minutes after my dog ate, I put him on his washable pad and said go potty. After he goes potty, I gave him a treat or praised him. Once he learned how to use the washable pads independently, I started teaching him to go potty in the backyard. Ten minutes after he ate or played, I took him outside to go potty until he started going to the door to tell me he needed to go potty. I taught him when to use the washable pads or backyard to go potty by where he was located in the house. I have a two-story house. I taught my Yorkie to potty outside when he was downstairs, and I taught him to go potty on the washable pads when he was upstairs. I watched him closely. If he ran upstairs to go potty, I then took him downstairs to go potty in the backyard. He automatically used the pads if he was upstairs. He learned quickly when to use the washable pads or backyard to go potty. I am glad that I taught him to do both, because if I am not able to take him outside to go potty due to bad weather or busy then he used the washable pads instead. Teaching my Yorkie to do both made living with my dog easier for me. |

| Laci will only go outside now, Im kind of happy she made this decision on her own tho, I had her pee pad trained and then had my rugs professionally cleaned , she lost the scent of the pee pads and started to use my house as a litter box. So we have ONLY been going outside, only 1 accident and it was my fault , she did do it right near the front door!! I took to long to get her outside when she woke up... urrgghhhh She does wonderful tho, only 1 accident since i have commited to outside potty training.. its wonderful... My older daughter gave me such a hard time about the pee pads anyways, she thought it was gross that I would let a dog go to the bathroom in our house.. I just dont know what I will do when we have a foot of snow in the winter??? |

| I do both for Sully (7 mos). I live in New England and winters here are a too cold for even me to go out. A couple of times we had days when the wind chill factor was -20 below and taking him out on those days is not an option. During the day he's confined to the kitchen with baby gates up. I take him out before I leave for work for poop time and when I come home for lunch break there's usually a couple of drops of pee (I think more of a marking pee) on the wee wee pads. When I get home from work at 5p he goes outside again and then once more before we go to bed. I also leave a wee pad in his xpen at night just incase, but he hasn't used that in about 2 weeks. The older he's getting the longer he's able to hold it. He won't go out in the rain, so I need them for those days - He thinks he's made out of sugar so he might melt. I mainly keep them out, just incase he gets that "gotta go" feeling and it's less stressful than worrying 24/7 about my floors/carpets. I'm a clean freak-a-holic. |
