How old is the puppy? Puppies should be taken out after waking up, after eating and after playtime. A puppy can only hold it's potty for about 1 hour for each month of it's age. So, if the puppy is 3 months old then they can hold it for about 3 hours.

O.k. Now is the time to get your gear together and make a plan for potty training. The more you schedule and keep things the same for the puppy the easier it will be for both of you. I used a puppy playpen with a potty pad (either the washale kind or disposable ones in a heavy frame), food, water, bed and a toy or two. Crate training is good too but it was harder for me...couldn't stand leaving that tiny thing in a crate with nothing to do for so long! Do you plan to free feed? It's a good idea to free feed while they are small so they always have food and fresh water available. As they get older you can schedule feedings 3 to 4 times a day...then you will know they need to go poo shortly after a meal and training will be easy.

| I think she means do you plan on scheduled feedings, or do you plan on leaving food out for the pup all the time, free feeding. A new puppy will need to be taken out much more often, like every hour while awake...during the training period. Once they start to understand when and where to potty the time can be stretched longer. An adult, well trained dog, can go a very long time between potty breaks. Winston at 5 years old, easily sleeps through the night, even 10 hours, without going potty. During his awake hours, he usually goes out every 4to 5 hours...always first thing in the morning...at noon...before supper...after supper and at bedtime. He is 100% potty trained, to go outside...and has been since he was 8 weeks old...he has never had an accident in the house. This can be done, Winston is proof!!!

I potty trained my dog like I did my kids, lol. I took him out every half hour and then extended the time each week until I saw that he was getting it. He only had accidents in his exercise pen area at night sometimes, but I am a stay-at-home mom who had plenty of time to do it this way.

I am still somewhat of a Yorkie newbie, but so far, I have been taking my four-month old Yorkie out after few hours during the day and once during the middle of the night. I schedule her feedings and take her out after eating. I got the Housetraining for Dummies book and use the schedule it suggests. So far, so good. Good Luck!
