| Omg..please help! I'm worried about Nicco! I've never had a dog before and I've had him for almost 4 months now so I'm not too sure how to react to problems like this. Well for one, he's been hacking a LOT. I asked the vet about it and he said that it's most likely reversed sneezing and not collapsed trachea (sp?). It sounds to me like he is trying to cough something up from his throat but nothing ever comes out... Also, Nicco has had all of his shots up to date and just recieved his last one (the puppy shots) a week and a half ago. Since i've been taking him to the vet, i've also been giving him de-worming pills. Today, i was walking to the living room and noticed a little brown thing on the floor right next to where he was sitting. I went to pick it up and it was a little sticky brown worm!!!! It was all curled up and disgusting and really sticky..probably the size of half a dime while curled up. I didn't see it coming out of Nicco and it wasn't in his poop BUT where else could it have came from?? Now i'm worried and don't know what to do!! I'm going to call the vet tmrw but is there anything you guys think it could be/what can I do? Please help!! |

| Did he have the Bordatello (sp?) shot? Sometimes that one can actually give the symptoms of kennel cough after getting the shot but it doesn't last long. It usually happens within a couple of weeks of getting the shot. We get little brown worms like that on our front deck when it rains. I think most worms a dog will have are white but if you have any concerns about it I would definitely ask your vet and maybe even take the worm in to show them. |

| It could be something as simple as allergies. With Spring coming in, it's allergy season not just for humans but for our furry friends as well. I think you are doing the right thing by contacting the vet tomorrow. Maybe the worm was brought in on fur, shoes, etc. Did you save the worm? They may want to see it as a precaution. Good luck!! |

| He hasn't received the bordatella shot... The vet suggested it but I wasn't sure if I wanted to give it to him. He is an indoor dog and never sees other dogs so I didn't really see the point. Should I get it for him?? I feel bad giving him all of these shots...he's already had his five (four puppy shots - they said the first one didn't count because he was too young when he got it and had to get it again, and one for rabbies). But if you guys can tell me whether it'd be beneficial to him in the long run, i'll get it for him? But anyways, i don't know what else the hacking could be if it's not from the shot... And it did rain today but he didn't go out all day and it wasn't there before...it just showed up randomly beside him. So i was left to assume it came from him... |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | lol not to gross you out but the worm could have come out of his butt or he could have dragged it in from outside. who knows. your best bet is to bring a stool sample in to the vet a week after his last worming dose. as for the hacking, you should try to get a video of it to show you vet. its the easiest way to show things to the vet that they do at home but don't/won't do at the vets office. Somtimes the bordatella vaccine can cause kennel cough and it does usually go away shorter after. here is a video of of dog with kennel cough, you will notice that the person can put pressure on the throat to get the dog to make the sound here is a reverse sneeze video. you cannot make the dog produce the sound by putting pressure on the throat. usually the opposite happens. this person is covering teh nose to make the dog breath out of his mouth instead, which will usually stop the episode. giving them a treat helps too.

Yeh, i suppose it could be allergies...but how would i find out...? Do I have to go to the vet for that again? I just don't want to keep going for something that i'm making out of nothing because they charge $85 for a physical exam everytime I go in and i've been in and out of there for the last 3 and a half months, lol. (Not that I don't think he's worth it - he definitely is...I just don't want to throw away money if I really don't have to...) And I did save the worm, so hopefully they can tell me where it's from! | |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | the bordatella vaccine needs to be given yearly. it is only needed if your dog is going to be around a lot of other dogs like at the grooming shop, dog park, pet store, or training class. kennel cough is very contagious and is airborne, like the common cold or flu. it can be hard to get rid of. I gave it to my yorkie when she was a pup because we were going to training classes and what not. i haven't given it to her since. when you first give the vaccine it has to be given twice, a month apart i believe, then its good for a year.

| Kennel cough is highly contagious for dogs. Even if he is not usually around another dog, if he is at the groomer, trainer or any other type of kennel he could contract it. I would definitely contact your vet about the chances of it being kennel cough and would suggest getting him vaccinated for it in the future. Snippet about kennel cough below... What Are the Symptoms of Kennel Cough? The symptoms of kennel cough are often quite acute. The Bordetella bacteria will take up residence in the respiratory system, causing severe irritation to the trachea and bronchi. A dog with kennel cough will have symptoms of a very dry, hacking cough. The cough is typically quite frequent, and the very act of breathing can trigger a coughing fit. Activities such as walking, running and playing also tend to trigger bouts of coughing in a dog with kennel cough. |

| Oh geez... it sounds a little more like the kennel cough video... It's not as frequent as that video though and he doesn't start hacking when I touch his throat either..it just happens randomly..sometimes he'll be playing/running and it'll happen for like 10 seconds or so..its like *hack* -2 second pause - *hack*, etc. lol How would he have gotten kennel cough though!? He hasn't been exposed to ANY other dogs...the only place i've been to with dogs is the vet and he never got near any of them. How is kennel cough treated?? How much is the medication and do i get it from the vet or from a pet store? I want to make sure he is okay!! |

| Kennel cough is airborne...he could have gotten it at the vet or even from another dog at the breeder's house. |
