| Mia has period and I'm clueless Hello everyone. I have a 7 month old Yorkie looks like she has her period. She has blood coming out of her little private area. What I'm concerned about is that she looks swollen in the private area is this normal? Any advice as to how to handle this little babies when they have their period? |

| Sounds like she has gone into "heat"....I haven't had to deal with that with my first yorkie..Daizy...but Tulip is 7 months old and I know it could be anyday... What I would suggest is to get some dog panties.....and put a pad inside to protect your floor...not sure how large she is...but you could also get a pair of plastic pants used for babies..and cut a hole out for her tail and line it with a panty liner as well.....but she'd have to be around 7 lbs or so...although my sister found a pair of doll panties that worked on her yorkie..lol Are you planning on spaying her in the future?? That might be something you want to consider when she's fully mature...I am waiting until Tulip is mature to get her spayed so we don't have to deal with the "heat" issues... Good luck...

| Their vulva engorges with blood during heat, so yes it is normal that it looks bigger.

| Yep, sounds like she's in her first heat. The swelling is perfectly normal, as it's the blood rushing to those areas. You will probably also notice that her little nipples are swollen. Silvia loves to have her tummy scratched, so that's the first thing I always notice when she goes into heat. Panties are a great idea to contain the mess (plus they're just cute!) I use the little denim ones with the velcro, because they're so easy to take on and off and cut a sanitary napkin into strips to put in them. If you're considering getting her spayed, in the near future would be a good time. But give her a week or two to let the swelling go down, as the enlarged blood vessels could be dangerous during surgery.

| Yes your baby is in Heat...You need to buy her some panties or I make mine out of a tube sock...She will be in Heat for about 25 days. Day 8 thru 15 after bleeding stop is when she could get prego...Please keep her away from any males. It take a split second.....Good Luck.... |

| How long does it take for the nipple swelling to go down again?

| is she tired? I remember how I always felt when I was in "heat"....my baby is sleeping a good amount. She still has some baby teeth that I'm afraid that are probably rotting instead of falling out. I want to make sure she isn't feeling tired from this and not from going in heat. I think I'll still take her and get her teeth checked out at the vet, but just wandering if yours is acting tired, too. Don't get me wrong, she still chases after the ball and was excited on her walk today but is also ready to lie down and sleep. |
