| Some newb questions Okay, i had a toy poodle that i lost last week and looking at other breeds my wife and i decide on a yorkie well it didn't take long to see that this dog is 100 times more energetic than my poodle ever was and chews on anything she can get her mouth on. Now with my toy poodle we never had a problem with her chewing on anything but the toys we gave her to chew on and picked up going to potty outside very quickly when i got tired of cleaning up pee and poop and dedicated myself to take her out every couple of hours even at night i set the alarm. The only thing my poodle hated so bad that we could do nothing with her was hair trimming. So we had to take her to groomers. So i can tell that my new baby won't be so forgiving and will take full advantage if were not the one's in control. So i'm confused on how to handle her, i wanna spoil her rotten, pick her up and give all kinda of kisses and loving, but i read they will think their the alpha cuz the alpha is the one that gets all the love and attention. So i've been picking her up and give kisses and love just spread out and i keep it short and sit her back down on the ground to play. Also we never trained our poodle with treats, she would stand at the front door and make noises when she needed to go out and potty, i trained her to sit but that was all the training i did, well besides playing fetch which she instantly loved and always brought the ball back to me where this little yorkie baby tries to run away and chew on it LOL. I've started with calling her name and giving a treat with praise when she looks at me, and telling her to come when she is far away. So now she will look and run to me for her treat LOL oh yea it's been rainy and cold so i hadn't been taking her out as i planned to potty, but she has been doing so well on using the pads in her playpen we keep her in, that i stuck a pad where she always runs and pee's when playing in the living room. So now after peeing on the pad she looks up wanting her treat! its too cute. So my main concern is can you spoil yorkies to where they will try to be alpha? Or does this really on happen if you don't also train them what is right or wrong with treats? any advice or place to find advice would be helpful. cuz i can see just by how energetic and bold she is, that this breed will easily train the owner instead of the owner training them, and i don't want that to happen. |

| I'm so sorry about the loss of your toy poodle!!! As far as spoiling a yorkie and confusing them with who's the Alpha.....As long as you set boundries and limitations for your yorkie...She should recognize that YOU are the Alpha. I spoil my babies ROTTEN!!! Holding them ALL the time....treats for praise..etc...But I also let them know that what mommy says...goes! And takin your baby on walks....making sure she walks next to you...and doesn't lead you will also teach her that YOU are the Alpha!!! Congrats on your new girl.....and don't worry about spoiling her..I don't believe you can spoil a human baby by holding and loving on them as much as you want...so I also think you can treat the yorkie baby the same way!! Good luck!! And remember yorkies can be much more difficult to potty train...so try to be patient!

| I'm so sorry to hear that you lost your baby. I have always had toy poodles my whole life. They are great. I have 3 yorkie babies and I spoil them rotten. You just have to be consistant with the training. I tend to change my voice to a stern one when I mean business. Otherwise I'm a high squeaker talking baby talk to them. You will not regret getting one of these babies. All they ask for is love. They are very smart also. You came to the right place for great advice about these little creatures. Everyone is so nice and very knowledgeable about this breed. It had helped me a great deal. Good luck and welcome. Post pictures when you get some we would love to see her. What is her name?

| HEHE k thanks for the replies I just wanna go about this baby different than my poodle, i see video's of them rolling over, high five and etc which i know ever dog is capable of with enough training and patience. And my poodle sure was smart enough and learned all the rules very quickly i just never went on and taught her how to shake and stay and other things. My yorkie baby name is Chloe. We got her 3 days ago, but didn't offically agree to a name till yesterday morning, but all it took was saying her name till she looked and gave her a treat now she looks everytime i call her name LOL Oh yea, 3 times now she has done this sweet howling sound LOL I heard it yesterday and also this morning my wife and i was in the bed and my wife was like what was that, i said thats Chloe LOL But when i'm in the same room with her i didn't look at her or anything cuz i don't want her to learn she can get attention by that cuz it's loud LOL Last edited by blahblah; 04-11-2009 at 01:50 PM. |

| Congrats on your new addition and condolences on your loss. I treat dogs the same way I do children. Patience, love and consistency. As long as you're consistent in their training/discipline then it's hard to go wrong. And always keep in mind when you're tempted to spoil them rotten - no one likes a bratty child and no one likes a bratty dog. Last edited by Symph2001; 04-11-2009 at 02:02 PM. |

| very true, thats why i've been trying to keep my greedy paws off her as much as i really want too HEHE. She's been doing awesome though, i have ferrets also and have a big playpen i let them play in when i get them out everyday, so i'm also using it as her pen since she is so active and u gotta keep an eye on her the whole time. My wife and i didn't have to watch our poodle like this, so it's a whole new experience and were both glad of the playpen LOL i'll get her out for a while and then put her back in to sleep and to let me rest and do other things, but she usally goes to her bed and sleeps or chews on her toys and stares at us when we walk by like u gonna get me out or what HEHE right now she's asleep on her back with her 2 front feet up in the air dangling LOL |

| So sorry about the loss of your poodle. And congratulations on your new baby Chloe. My advice is don't worry about spoiling her as long as she has boundaries. Just like skin babies you can never give them too much love but they need to know what is and is not acceptable behavior. Have fun with your little one. P.S. Love your screen name...
