| mating question I have a female yorkie that will probably not weigh enough to get spayed by her first heat. I have 2 male yorkies I will get fixed by 6mths. old. When do I need to start worrying about mating so I can make sure I get the boys fixed on time?

| How old is your female now? She can breed and get pregnant on her first heat so if she isn't big enough to be spayed she isn't big enough to breed...you will have to keep them totally seperated. |

| Thats why I am getting boys fixed. Will they try to mate with her before she goes in heat? Right now they are 4 mths old. She is only 1.4 lbs. The vet said maybe when she gets to 2 lbs. I am not so sure about that myself. She is so tiny.

| They all play the humping game when they are little...I would get the male (s) neutered just to be sure. You can wait to see if she gets a little bigger but keep them seperated when you aren't around and keep panties on her and belly bands on them just to be safe. She can't get pregnant if she isn't in heat but they will try and you don't want any accidents with her small size. |

| That depends on your vet...you should call and ask them about their protocol. Different vets do them at different times and weights...I just had my 5 month old neutered but he is quite a bit bigger than yours. I know rescue groups and the humane society do them younger but there is controversy over the long term affects of early spay/neuter. Talking with your vet would be the best advice I could give... |

| The boys are big enough to get fixed now, not sure if your vet will fix them before 5 mos. I know our vets won't. How old is your little girl, or is she 4 mos also? If so, she probably won't go in to heat for awhile. My little one stays between 2 and 2 1/2 lbs and is 10 mos. and has not gone in to heat yet |
