| Help! My smart pup learned how to jump out of the playpen Chloe has smartened up and figured out how to jump out of her playpen that I constructed from pantry closet shelving. Its about 20'' high, but shes very spunky and is a big jumper and has worked her way out of there. I keep a bed and her food/water (attached to the grates) on one side and her washable potty pad on the other side. I work M-F 9-5 most days, so with commute I am away up to 10 hrs a day. This is why I do not crate her, because I cannot come home for lunch. Once she jumps out, she no longer can jump back in, thus, no food, water, or potty pad!! Since she has learned how to jump out, what solutions do I have now? I want her to be comfortable as can be. I live in a townhouse and cannot baby gate her to the kitchen (open floor plan). |

| I've seen some people use window screens. Could you go to a hardware store and get one or two, depending on the size of your pen and the size of the screens. You should be able to tie them onto the top of the pen.

I would start with the 'Stay' command. Pick a day when your off of work, and work with her all day. Put her in her pen, then give her a treat or a piece of her dog food, while saying 'Stay'. Take a few steps back, then walk back up to give her another treat, repeating the command 'Stay'. Keep doing this, only walking further and further away each time, then eventually out of the room, then out of the room for a few minutes, and so on....... She'll get the idea, just praise her and give her treats each time she stay's in her pen. And don't forget 'Stay'. And I would suggest buying a Kong and filling it with her fav. treats. Don't let her play with the Kong except on day's that you work. Give it to her when you put her in, right before you leave for work. As soon as you get home, if she did in fact stay in the pen, take the Kong first, then pick her up, praise her, say something like, "you stayed, good girl!" and give her a special treat of your choice. She needs to relate the Kong, to staying in the pen. Hope this helps! Good Luck!

Sounds good, we just got a Kong thats a pink bone with space to hold her treats. I put peanut butter in there or her Mother Hubbard Livr Crunchies. Do you all think they get tired of the same treats all the time? What do you all use as 'special treats'? | |

Bil-Jac is a great brand. They love the taste because it's so strong, and they are also good for their teeth. Molly loves peanut butter, and cheese. They make treats in both flavors. Apples are also a good reward, for dog's that like them.

| We use the wire shelving as a partition from the livingroom area to the rest of the house & the larger of the 3 babies learned to leap over last week. I was lucky to have a wider piece & put that up as well...Now I hang on to the breakfast bar to cross over In the last two days the same pup learned to leap onto the sofa The littler ones can do it if the dog bed is down on the floor (I have to keep it up when they're out because they have torn half of the wicker off ) They grow up so fast

| I purchased a puppy playpen off Ebay. It was 50.00 but sooooo worth it. It has screen panels for excellent ventilation. It has 2 zip side doors. AND the top is a zip screen. Same mesh as siding. When you need to close the top you just zipper it closed. No way for them to jump out or even move the top. It's about 3 1/2 feet and it's round. Almost 2 feet high, a bit under. I also love the screen sides, it lets Jemma see all around. I think it is one of the best investments I got for Jemma. And it has a attached floor which is fully washable. And it folds so you can bring it with you if you need too. Last edited by Jemma; 04-02-2009 at 12:57 PM. |

| And your baby doesn't chew thru the mesh? Thats why I stayed away from the mesh, she is a chewer (teething). I just figured out how to upload an avatar, that is her standing up to the top of the pen. |

| I checked it out on Amazon and people mentioned that their (Yorkie) dogs could stand on the grates and climb out, even at 34.25''. I guess you have been lucky so far! |
