Senior Yorkie Talker | feeling like a hyprocrite... Hey Guys, My husband and I are both Pescatarians, [which means the only kind of meat we eat is small sea life: small fish, shrimp, shellfish, ect...]. Whereas Molly, she eats Eukanuba dry food [which contains meat and meat-by-products], and the Eukanuba canned chicken chunks. I want her to have the best nutrition, and healthy coat and skin. (It's very easy for her coat to get oily, and/or her skin to dry out and get itchy and flaky.) This really makes me feel like a hyprocrite because of my beliefs..... Any input?

| While I am not any kind of vegetarian, I can understand this feeling. One way to think about it is that you are a human and choose what you eat and can be healthy. While it's hard to think of a yorkie being "wild" they are dogs and in the wild k9's eat meat, they hunt, and it's natural. |

| Aww, I'm a vegetarian and I understand how you feel. Dogs can have a healthy veg diet but it is not easy and takes way more knowledge than I have. Their meant to be carnivores where we can live very healthfully on a plant based diet. We're just not made the same. You aren't a hypocrite at all- you are just doing what is best for your baby's health. My dogs eat meat as well and I have no intention of ever changing that. Since you eat fish, there are great, high quality foods that contain fish as the only protein. Nature's Balance makes one and I'm sure you could get tons of recommendations of other brands. You could always look into that if it would make you feel better.

| As an educated adult, you have the choice of what to put into your body to keep it healthy. Dogs do not have this choice, but you can choose for them. Choosing something that is within their normal dietary range is the best you can do for them. Feel like a hypocrite? No I would not. Dogs need the protein and amino acids that are found in meat. There are 8 essential amino acids that are only found in red meat, that are needed for essential body functions. You are thinking about what is best for them, and I do not see how that could ever be bad. Last edited by lil fu fu girl; 04-01-2009 at 04:09 PM. |

I was thinking the same and i feel even better hearing it from someone else. I just want her to be healthy, and I know, as humans, it's easier for us to be healthy because we can take care of ouselves. My husband and I are the ones that take care of Molly, She can't take care of herself...so she'll have exactly what she needs to be healthy. Thanks again!

Your right, we're just not made the same. Thinking about it, I couldn't feed Molly the same diet I have; it just wouldn't be natural for her----even though it feels most natural to me. I just have to remember that it's everything she needs, and it doesn't mean that I support anything that I'm against. Thank You.

| All 3 of my dogs (2 labs 1 yorkie) eat a vegetarian diet. I feed them Nature's Recipe - Vegetarian Recipe. One of my labs has severe allergies and this diet has been great for her. There is also no corn or wheat in this formula. For the convenience of not having to buy 3 different kinds of food for each one - and after consulting with my vet - I feed this to all of them. They do not have to take any extra supplements - they are in the food. Although I do give each of them a Synovi G3 soft chew daily as my lab with the allergies also has hip dysplaysia and she needs it. The vet said to give it everybody - it is good for all of them. Chip does get a little bit of the Nature's Recipe Farm Stand Select wet food in his meal daily - sometimes I will give him the Lamb Recipe since he does not have to be on the veg. diet all the time. They have two flavors - Vegetarian and Lamb Recipes in the wet food. The kibble is small enough for the yorkie too - he will actually chew it! (btw Chip is 6 lbs) All of my dogs have great coats - no itching - are shiny and they are very healthy. I hope this helps with your dilemma. |

| I can understand how you feel but if your dog had her choice, I'm sure she'd pick meat. Dogs aren't exactly carnivores though. Their eating habits are more like that of omnivores. They can do very well on vegetarian diets or fish or egg based diets. Just because you don't feed meat doesn't mean you are doing her a disservice. I personally wouldn't feed a vegan diet unless a health issue made it necessary. I do feed egg and fish based food though and that is just fine. You can also do cottage cheese if you homecook.

I would like to see if she likes fish. ......... I wish Eukenuba offered a canned fish meal....like Salmon. That would be PERFECT! I'm kinda afraid to change her food brand again.
