| Docked or born that way? Ok guys now please try and refrain from laughing and picking on me too much but I'm quite confused as to whether or not a yorkies tail is docked or if they are just born short as they are. Bc I just saw a picture of a purebred yorkie who has a long tail so I'm dumbstruck. I kinda figured that I guess it all just depends on the furbaby alone or that they were just docked at a young age. Somebody please help me out w/out picking too much! Thanks! |

| They are docked at about three days of age. I believe most of Europe has abandoned the practice.

| That's not a stupid question because some breeds are born tail-less. However, yorkies is not one of them. |

| I love the long tail, but Tucker was already docked when we got him, of course. Well, I love his "little stubby tail" too!

I Love Thor Donating Member | I am so glad that someone asked that! I would love to piggy back off of that. I know that it is dangerous to put these little dogs 'under' let alone when they are so new and tiny! So how is it done? Without pain relief or sedation? And same with the dew claws. I;m really interested to know exacly how this is done. I have a fear about how it is done. If someone (maybe a breeder) could explain further on this issue I would be most appreciative! Thanks, Hannah |

| The dewclaws are removed and tails docked at 3-5 days of age. This is done with nothing for the pain. Mine have always cried and broke my heart. Sometimes they don't cry. To me, the day that this needs done is the worst part of having a litter. It is the standard though and the pups are usually over it in a few hours. Mine do cry off and on for almost an hour and then it is just a little whimper here and there. Still....totally heartwreching. My vet stitches the tails and wraps their little feet if the dew claw bleeds. Sometimes they don't. Hope this helps anyone that is curious. All I can say is "be glad it is done by the time you get them as their forever homes". |

| I do tails and dewclaws at 3 days if the baby is over 2 ounces. I have not found that the puppy suffers excessively..they do hate being turned on their backs and that is how I hold them. No bleeding and they are right back with mom. These little Biewer/parti puppies I now have are a dream to care for. No cosmetic surgeries and they are sooooo cute.. Sorry, I digress. They do not practice any cosmetic surgeries in Europe now on any breed. |

Dew claws are the extra toe on the side. The pups would be in danger with sedation. It only takes a couple of minutes to do this process with each pup. Many, many dogs get the dew claws removed as they can get ripped off later in life and cause a lot of pain. Some are left with dew claws on if they are to be used for agility work someone on here said once. My mom's pups never cried when hers got done this time. I always have it done on day three. She had hers done on day four, so I may try that next time. The babies are back to normal in a few hours. As I have said, I dread this part. In addition, a Boxer pup has to get his ears cropped. I am sooooo thankful that the Yorkie doesn't have to go through that.

| This is very informative. My two were already docked and I have to say I like their tails docked rather than long but hate they have to go through this procedure. Chloe's tail was docked at the 3rd vertebrae and Lacey's the 4th. Lacey has the cuter tail, once her hair started growing more. I wonder, what is the proper length? |

I asked my vet that and he said the length is cut to the proportion of the pup's tail, but I can't remember the exact ratio.
