Default Black/Tan coloring vs Silvery, Blue

I've recently stepped up my search for a female Yorkie. I really want an all black and tan one. I really don't like the silvery, blue color on some Yorkies (apologies for those that love that color or have Yorkies with that color).

Is it fairly safe to say that if the mom and dad have no silvery blue then their kids won't either? Also, if one parent has blue and the other doesn't, is blue generally a recessive or a dominant gene?

Thanks, Steve

I'm not an expert, but I think most of them are born black/tan, and turn gold head/legs/and silver body...I felt like you, in the beginning, wishing my yorkie would stay black and tan, but now the silver is coming in, I can't wait to get the black cut off, someday, so she looks like a real yorkie lol...I heard someone say, on this site, that yorkies are like a box of chocolates..you don't know what you're going to get, 'till you bite into one....(maybe that wasn't it, but you get the drift)...Anyway, I can tell you, for sure, that whatever color your baby turns out to be, you will love him/her, as these yorkies absolutely own our hearts...You'll see....lol
Love, Maggie & Apple
p.s...they do have the parti color ones, I think? maybe you'd like to check into that?

I think it's hard to really determine what color coat a pup will turn out to be
as an adult unless your go way back into the line to make sure all parents,
grandparents etc has black and gold coats. Most, to my knowledge, will
turn silver, the preferred adult coat.
I'm like you. I love the black and gold.
Buddy is black and gold at 5yrs old but when his coat is allowed to grow
he will turn silver with gold streaks, however, his roots are always jet
black. I just groomed him down and he's black once again.
Buying a puppy because he's black and gold won't guarantee his adult
coat will be that color. Buy your puppy because you have a connection
with him. When he grow's you won't care what color he is. I am willing
to bet you on that.
Good luck,

Totally agree!

I wanted the same thing. But now, Jackson's got some silver on his head and I can see silver roots on his body and I'm anxious to see him with the silver coloring!
I can already tell his head is turning all gold and the "white" is going away on his head already!

From what I've been told, if a yorkie pup has white on his head he will
be gold not tan as an adult. So if you want gold that color you can
be sure of getting if he has white on his head. Buddy had white on his
head and chest as a pup. As he got older he lost the white and turned
golden not tan. As least you'll be sure of getting one of the two color's
you prefer. Possibly. Nothing is written in stone.

All 3 of mine are pretty much black and tan. Cali who is going to be 4 is still all black and tan, Pixie who is 3 just recently started getting a little silver in her black but is still pretty black. Roxie is 1 1/2 and really dark even her head has not cleared much. I was hoping one of mine would be lighter I love the silvery blue.

Yep, I think he will look very similar to Buddy actually! His coloring is such a pretty gold, I love it. I'll try to find a picture to show it. But yep, his head is pretty white but it's growing out already.

Here's a pic, you can kind of see the gold going up his head and taking over the white! I love it.

And the whiteish roots on his black body puppy fur seem to be more like a black/silverish. Who knows!!

In our case, Belle is black/gold....Both of her parents were this gorgeous silvery color...I fell in love with them....And she never changed colors...She is as black and gold as can be...I love it but would have loved the light silvery color..Go figure

You can see how black she in my avatar

Momo stayed blk & tan w/a little greying on the top of his head. I swear I can see reddish & bluish hues when he's in the sun. Never met his mom & dad, so I had no clue how he was gonna turn out. I personally love the blue & tan coloring, but I love my Momo no matter what his color is!

What about taking a picture of the potential puppies with a digital camera and flash then looking for the green or red reflection in the eyes? Remember that article that was posted recently? I was thinking when I read it that it might help in choosing a puppy.

People have said that my little black and tan girl will be silver and gold because the camera flash in her eyes is green. If it is red the dog will be black and tan? Here is a pic of her as a baby looking like a green eyed demon.

The eyeshine determines the kind of coat, not color of coat. Green eye usually means silky coat & red eye is cottony coat.

Love

My lil Gucci man is black and gold and I am pretty sure he will stay that way. He hasn't cleared really anything at all lol not even on his head. I ADORE HIS COLOR!! I love the silver and tans as well but I prefer the darker. I don't know what his parents looked like, but I am sure you can get a black and gold from blue parents or a blue and silver from black parents. I get messages daily asking about how one can get a Yorkie like Gucci but to be honest, he just picked me and I am in love with him .. there was no science to that .. maybe a lil chemistry

I too see reddish hints in his coat from the sun

Here is his pic

I looked at the article again, and it still seems to have something to do with coat color to me, tho not as I remembered.

I absolutely love your little Gucci. He is like definitely one of the cutest Yorkies I've seen on here!! LOL. And that's no offense to anyone else - I think they're all cute. But Gucci is just a doll.
