| Yorkie weight and health Having trouble with my first ever post so I hope this doesn't post twice. Anyway, I am mommy to my first Yorkie. His name is ROO. I went with a friend to pick up a puppy and fell in love with him. I was ignorant to the weight thing and didn't even realize that the fad was to get a little one. I didn't even ask anything about weight. He was 2.5 lbs at 12 weeks old. Now he is 6 months old and 3.5 lbs. After reading some, I am concerned that he is too small and that I should be worried about his bones. He sails off the couch after jumping about an extra foot up in the air and turning around airborne and landing. He is like a bouncing ball. He isn't sickly at all. Do I need to be worried about this jumping. Is he going to break a bone? He goes everywhere and runs in the yard until I am out of breath. Seems like he is underweight from what I am reading but he appears overly healthy. Do I need to try to protect him from jumping off the sofa?? I don't know how I will but I can try. Should I be concerned? |

| I posted this same question about a week ago. LOL. Tobie is my first Yorkie too so I have had a ton of questions. From everything I was told, Yorkie's love to jump off of things and Tobie is no exception. He doesn't just jump.. he does a flying leap. Anyway, I was told that there are people who have had their Yorkies break a leg from jumping off furniture so you probably want to stop him if you can. I know it's hard... there is no way I could keep Tobie from never jumping off the furniture. I seriously thinks he enjoys it! I have been trying to stop him though when I think he's about to do it. Oh, I forgot to add... as far as the weight I have no idea. I have heard that the weight usually doubles from what it is at 12 weeks (I think thats right) but I also know that just because thats the "norm" doesn't mean there is definitely something wrong with your baby. Hopefully someone else will be more helpful with this

| You have every reason to be concerned. Missy is an oz less than 3 lbs at 7 months of age. She broke her front leg 7 weeks ago by jumping off of my hand just 4" off of the ground. I have been warned by my vet and the specialist who did her surgery to really try to watch her jumping. It is hard, because they are dogs, but couches and beds should be avoided. The specialist also said alot of injuries happen to these little ones from slipping on linoleum. I think that I'm going to purchase some pet stairs or ramps for Missy to get on the bed and couch. Anything to avoid having to pay 3,500 for another leg surgery.

You do have to be concerned about him getting hurt. Because they are a small active breed, you always have to watch them. They do seem to love jumping up and down from things that they probably should not. I have put ramps or steps by the things mine like to jump up on and off of the most. With ramps in place they almost always use them. I have ramps to the window seat in the kitchen and my bed. I have a little step to the couch and a chair in the living room. It is a lot less wear and tear on their little knees, hips and backs. But despite our best efforts they will sometimes jump off things that are too high. Keep them healthy, feed them a quality food to build strong bones, use ramps and steps, see the vet regularly to check his knees and hips, and keep your fingers crossed! and don't forget to enjoy every crazy minute!

| I guess I am very blessed Laci is 17 weeks old and wont even attempt to jump off my couch and she cant get on it either... she does this little thing she runs really fast toward my couch and then tries to jump but never makes it up... Im really glad that she cant because I do worry about her legs... its pretty scarey to think of a broken bone |

| Yes, I'd be concerned. 3.5 pounds is very small and your pup could be at risk of serious injury from jumping.

| YES - you must control the jumping. All sorts of things can happen, broken bones, luxating patella, disc and spine injury. I have about 6 Foam Ramps all over my house for mine to get up and down from the couch, etc.... NEW Foam Dog Cat Pet Ramp - eBay (item 110369456133 end time Apr-02-09 17:57:12 PDT) |

| welcome to YT Congrats on being a yorkie owner! You have gotten good advice. My Roxy is about 3 1/4 lbs - she is a wild woman - and she is 7 yrs old. My Bubba is around 4 1/2 lbs and not nearly so fragile - but he's a lazy boy - lol. Take precautions & watch them.

| Willow is only 11 weeks but less then 2lbs and she hurts her leg regularly just from running around the house not even jumping off of things. She gets so excited she runs so fast she will either run into something or do little flips in the air. She will limp around for a little while then she is all fine again for a few days till she does something crazy again. I suggest just being careful but not paranoid ya want them to have fun and not be penned up constantly. My niece has a maltipoo that broke its leg at 9 weeks just running and jumping on the sidewalk which is only like an inch or two in height. Just never know but they do heal fast if something does happen it seems. |
