Nursed by different mom I am planning to visit a 5 week old Yorkie, in which I have a dep. on, who was born 3 1/4 oz. and was switched immediately to another mother's litter because she had more milk. She has been with new mom ever since. Are there any negatives to doing such a thing ? Could there be psychological and behaivoral issues ahead as a result ? Thanks.

Is behavior should be normal. The only negative point would by the puppy miss out on the colostrom milk. The colostrom (milk produced in the first 24 hours) is extremely important for the puppies. It carries immunities that protect the puppies from infection and bacteria. But if he is healthy at 5 weeks, he should be ok.

the colstrum has the antibodies the pup needs until it is old enough to get it's shots. it is almost old enough to get it's shots started. There will not be anything wrong at all with the puppy. Sometimes breeders have to do this. Especially with a little one that maybe the other litter mates root out or something like you mentioned. Mom not having any milk.

Thanks. The new mom delivered her litter one day after the real mom did, so colostrum should not be an issue. Glad to know she is not more inclined to mental issues.... Last edited by jackiec; 03-29-2009 at 07:22 AM. Reason: left out a word
