| Oh no he didn't!! Last night I took Tobie out to potty when I noticed he was chomping on something. I picked him up to see what he had and saw it was something white. I stuck my fingers his his mouth to try to get it out and he tried to bite me! When he dropped it, I saw that it was a piece of a bone! gross. Have no idea what animal its from or how it got there. Anyway, how should I handle that? My first instinct was to lightly spank his bottom but I don't want to do that. I just told yelled at him no and told him to "drop it" - even though he has no idea what that means. Is this normal? How do I let him know thats not okay? He has never done this before. Today he had pulled some fuzz out of a blanket and I picked him up and got that out of his mouth just fine. Any advice?

| Hi, if he is the 15wk. old Yorkie, get used to it.... he is gonna pick up EVERY tiny little thing he sees and can get to before you do, It's what puppies do, Yorkie Puppies. I have 2 that are today 17wks. and we have been chasing the female all over the livingroom tonight taking things out of her mouth. She pics up anything we drop even my kniting needles or ball of yarn. Just be watchful and you and he will be fine.. Any more questions feel free to ask, we've all done that and been there... good luck.. |

| I'm more concerned about him trying to bite me when I went to take it out of his mouth. I've kinda gotten used to him picking up EVERYTHING. lol. Like I said, he is perfectly fine when I take anything else from him but for some reason he did not like it when I tried to get the bone from him. How should I discipline him for that?

| I'm still having trouble teaching Baxter ''no bite''. I point my index finger at him and say in a firm voice ''no bite''. He usually just growls at me then walks away. I wouldn't tap his bottom, because that might just be taken as agressive from the dog's point of view and may think you are playing with him. Good luck though!

| I agree, I think he thinks that you are playing with him. I would make sure that he learns "drop it" or "leave it" as they will pick everything up! My two are famous for that, picking dried worms out theirs mouths is what made me sure to teach them that! YUK! Also mine will tend to sniff and lick at bird poo-that is nasty as well as can be a health hazard. They are really good at those 2 commands. (Whew!)

| Lucas picks up EVERYTHING as well and then takes off like a bat-outta-hell. I think it helps if, after they bite, you say NO or NO BITE loudly and then refuse to give them any attention for a few minutes. That seemed to work for us. PS I LOVE that his name is Tobie Teddington.. SO cute.

| Bite me, will you? Riley can get a little carried away when we're playing with his squeaky toys, so what I say is "OWEEEEE!" and he stops biting immediately. I don't know if he realizes that it hurts me, or if he doesn't like the sound of the word, but it works every time with him.Telling him "no bite" just doesn't have the immediate response I want from him. Give it a shot. Last edited by azureblue54; 03-26-2009 at 09:46 PM. |

| With both Gracie Ruth and Yogi I constantly give and take away things just so they know everything belongs to Momma and I can give or take away whenever I want. Yogi is toy possessive and I've had to work a bit more with him. If I go to take a toy away and he doesn't want to give it up I take hold of his whiskers with my thumb and forefinger and give a gentle little shake/tug and tell him to Drop It in a kind of growly voice. He will let go then and I'll praise him. I also do the little tug if either is going ballistic barking their heads off at something and not listening to me. It's a very gentle and short tug, just something to break their focus and get it back on me. I'ts working really well with G's barking. Now I just have to say Quit and start reaching for her and she'll usually stop, but always with an justification. "But Momma!! Don't you hear that danger? I'm just letting you know there's a dangerous noise 5 streets over. I heard it, honest!"
