| need some ideas to protect yorkies... Neighbors of mine (we share a chain link fence, their property, which was there where they bought the house) have children that insist on feeding the dogs (I have 4) chocolate, etc throught the fence and squirting them with large water pistols. I've asked them nicely not to, not working ... these are small kids (age 3-7)and there are often several in their yard...parents don't speak english and we have had run-ins with them before over damage done by their lawnmover, items "shot" into my house by accident. is there something nasty smelling (not harmful to the dogs) that I can put out so the kids "go away"? I don't think they are mean kids, just unsupervised and uneducated around dogs. roxanne

| I say 6 foot stockade!! I don't know what to say. What would I do??? I don't know. Maybe some tall bushes so they can't see into your yard. Maybe a small fence or edging also so your guys can't get near the fence. This is terrible that you can't even enjoy your yard without these kids bothering you. Good luck!

| I agree...a tall privacy fence may be your only line of defense in this situation and I would make sure there are no knot holes in it where they can still get the end of their squirt gun through. You might have to be careful about what they might launch over the top though. Kids...who says you gotta love 'em?? |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Who owns the fence? If you do, it might be worthwhile to purchase some of those vinyl strips you thread through that type of fence. Not only would it plug up the holes where they poke through items, but it would also impair their visual contact with the dogs. I would strongly advise against putting anything out that could potentially cause harm to the children. Do not lose perspective while protecting your dogs...these are human children who could be harmed. Perhaps there is a group in your area who provide language translation who would accompany you to "talk" to the parents and explain in their language what is happening. More than likely the local police, hospital, or churches have someone who is fluent in their language and would help you. If that is not an option, seek out a teacher who specializes in that language. I agree with you that it sounds very much like a lack of education plus possible cultural differences. The children probably think they are giving a treat to your dogs by sharing with them. I would seek out a translator who could help you explain to the parents and children and who could translate your introduction to the pets. Given the right approach, these children could become your pets' most avid protectors. By appealing to them to help see that the wrong things are kept away from your pets, you will have engaged their interest and, more than likely, their loyalty to your animals. Languages and cultural differences can be overcome if a bit of time is invested. Granted you should be able to protect your pets in their own backyard without having to go to such lengths but we are truly becoming the melting pot we once thought we were. Make these neighbors and their children your friends even though it will require time investment on your part. I think the outcome will probably surpass your expectations! |

| If a fence is not feasable, I would go the berry route. Raspeberries have thick canes and thorns. Or perhaps shrub roses or Pyracantha, which is also very thorny. Plant a border of them 2-3 foot thick around their fence on your side. This way if the kids try to reach in they are going to get stuck, and maybe that will stop them. |

| Can you get a video of the children doing these acts? If possible then send a registered cease and desist letter requesting that they stop their children from feeding your dogs (especially food that is toxic to them) as well as tormenting/teasing them by shooting their water guns at them. This might be a way of protecting yourself and provide a legal paper trail. Of course it would be helpful if you could find someone that could put it in what ever language they speak though I wouldn't think that would be your responsibility. I'm not a lawyer so this might not even be possible. Anybody know if something like this could help in this situation? It wouldn't guarantee it would stop but they couldn't deny you made the request. Now I'm just rambling from being up all night so I'm off to get some sleep. I would also seriously consider a tall privacy fence.
