What is a "correct" Yorkie body?

Good news!!!!!!!! I have an appointment next week to go look at a one year old male Yorkie. I have learned a lot on here and have a question for you seasoned owners. I keep hearing about 'correct" bodies. Does this mean a short body, short legs and a short nose? I want to make sure my Yorkie is "correct" because eventually, I will get a female and try to have me some furbabies. This dog is about two hours away from me and is AKC registered, he has never been advertised for sale on any of the yorkie sites. I believe the gntleman that is selling him has been forthright about him. he just sired a litter of puppies and reason for selling is that they are getting out of the business. He said his ears are not erect due to having ear mites as a young puppy and being treated for that for a long time. His body is black, his head is golden and his legs are just a little more tan than his head. His asking price is 600. How does all this sound to ya'all. Thanks. I am so excited. AND I still get a pup from my friend when her yorkie is bred. Don't I have a jewel of a husband!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is a link to the American Kennel Club Yorkshire Terrier Standard
http://www.akc.org/breeds/yorkshire_terrier/index.cfm

Also the Canadian Kennel Club Standard
http://www.ckc.ca/Default.aspx?tabid=137

Research and Read is my best advice, also try and find some breeders who's Yorkshire Terriers you admire.

Always ask to see the parents, very good way to judge what your pup will look like.

I think having a correct body is having a body without any hunches in it like a roach back.

no pictures but he gave me a pretty good description of him and of course, I will not purchase him until I eyeball him. (Next week) he weighs between 3 and 1/2 to 4lbs and has sired one litter.

Body

Well proportioned and very compact. The back is rather short, the back line level, with height at shoulder the same as at the rump.

Legs and Feet
Forelegs should be straight, elbows neither in nor out. Hind legs straight when viewed from behind, but stifles are moderately bent when viewed from the sides. Feet are round with black toenails. Dewclaws, if any, are generally removed from the hind legs. Dewclaws on the forelegs may be removed.

Straight from the AKC website..
Good luck.Is he house broken..Most stud dogs aren't

Glad that your going to look at him before you bring him home. Just look at a lot of Yorkie pics that way when you see him you'll have a better idea of what he really should look like. The only thing that puts a flag up for me, since you think that you want to breed him later on is the ears not being erect. That really could be hereditary, not mites, and if you assume that his ears would be up, if not for the mites, and you pass this trait on, it is not good. If you're just going to keep him as a pet there's nothing wrong with down ears, my Barney has those ears, but he's fixed. I don't know if I would take the chance of breeding him, since you can't see his partents for their ears...

Thanks, I have been stuck like glue to this site for about two weeks ever since my hubby agreed to get me a yorkie and I have learned a lot from you guys. I have a pretty good idea what to look for but just wanted to be sure. I will be buying him for breeding but the breeding is a looooonnngg time off. The friend of a friend that I am going to buy a female pup from has seven yorkies. All the females ears are up but her males are not and she said she had never seen a male with erect ears. Of course with my newly acquired knowledge, I let her know that, yes, indeedy the males ears almost always stick up. I can see that this ear thing is something I have to watch out for but I also know that once I see this little guy, I will be a goner for sure . So you are saying the ears thing might be hereditory? I need to call my vet about that. Thanks for the info.

If you are seriously looking for breeding , you might be better looking somewhere else . Sorry to say but he needs to be more than cute . He needs to be as close as possible of the standard .

I know he needs to be more than cute. That's why I have been here day and night trying to learn all I can about the breed and the care of them before I even purchase one. I'm almost afraid to go look at him. It will be hard to think with my head once he wraps those little paws round my heart. BTW, at what age do the ears usually come up? Just in case i don't buy him and get a puppy instead. I am getting a yorkie next week and another in feb. The first will be a male.

Erect ears come at different times for different yorkies. My first 2 yorkies had erect ears by 8 weeks. Rebel was about 8 1/2 weeks. Now my friend's yorkie's ears didn't stand up till she was around 6 months. It all depends on the thickness of the pads and how much hair they have on them.

Go look at the male. You have a starting point but don't buy on impulse. Take pictures and get opinions from different breeders. JMHO

I would get a mentor who is familiar with the standard (although if you are breeding for pet quality then temperament is most important) and can evaluate the dog for you. If you are afraid you will make an "impulse" buy if you see them I would request lots of pics that you can post on here for the breeders and others with knowledge on here can give their opinions. I would ask for lots of full body shots from every direction as well as profiles and face shots. If you can get the teeth alignment too then you could at least get some advice before you go so you won't make a big mistake.

Good luck.

Thank you all for the great advice altho some of it has discouraged me just a little. it is so hard in the area I live in to even find a Yorkie that meets my requirements. In fact, this one is the only one i even inquired about that is even under seven pounds or the baby puppies parents all are six or seven or even higher. i don't want to go over five pounds. Also, most around here are CKC. My husband is a breeder and trainer of Field Champion Rabbit dogs (Beagles) and is a member of the Hall of Fame for that. he is admanant(sp) that it be AKC. Sorry, all you CKC guys. I don't really understand his reasoning nor do I question it with the thirty years plus experience he has in this field. But he admits he doesn't know Yorkies and has poured over this site for days with me. You guys are great. I think I will call tomorrow and see if he can email me some pictures of him. I am also going to call our vet about the ears. I certainly don't want to pass along something that might be heriditory.
