| "shying" away ??? Jett is about 9 months old; Jorja is 4 months old. They are not related. They came from different breeders in opposite parts of the state. They have been well loved in an active home with me, my husband, our 11 year old and our 13 year old. They've never been hit or yelled at. We do believe in positive action reinforcement for all behavioral issues. Both of them will not come to us when we call them by name. Both of them back away when we kneel to their level and try to pick them up. Now, I realize that there are times when a dog does not want to be handled but sometimes they DO need to be picked up or removed from a situation---and dog gone it! but sometimes I just want to cuddle the little buggers. What gives? Is this typical Yorkie behavior?

| In the past, why were you calling them to you? Sometimes if you mainly call them to do unpleasant things, they remember and anticipate what you are going to do. I would try having treats with you and rewarding when they come to you. Once they associate a treat with answering your call, you are home free. Also, if you look up the stages in a puppy's development, 4-8 months is when they become more independent. If they always came when called, you may see them ignoring you. There are a lot of good sites that give you training tips. Good Luck!

| I don't know if I really have the answer. Perhaps the younger one is just getting signals from the older one. Also, sometimes we worry so much about them (moms just do) and they sense that. Perhaps someone will have a similar situation and they can help you. There is always lots of caring helpful people here and I am sure everything will be just fine. (reinforcement!) |

I will try to call them over with the reward of a treat and maybe that will help.

| Suri was like this when we first had her and she has never been hit or yelled at. My breeder and I use positive reinforcement also. I notice she started doing it when people would overwhelm her. She is 2 pounds (now and 1 pound then) and people would just come up to her and try to pick her up and were just not use to having a small dog. Ifi have visitors I ask them to sit down and let her come to them and when we are out I pick her up or ask people to kneel down. She hasn't acted shy since. She has always came to me but it was more with others, now she is comfortable with everyone and does not do the shy thing.

| My Bonnie is just like that too. I can say "Bonnie" or "Bonnie come here" all day long and she will just ignore me. But I taught her by "Come, Bonnie" and when I say that she will run like the wind to me. (of course she gets a treat) BUT once she gets there she will not let me pick her up. Even when she WANTS me to pick her up, she will give me the "run around". The only time she will run up to me and get picked up is when I ask if she wants to go outside. LOL |

| Both of my dogs know "pick you up" and they will turn around for me to pick them up. They will do this even if they are doing something else. They always turn around and are facing away from me when I do this. I have noticed that Cooper doesn't like to be picked up from the front angle. He will do that "shy away" thing if we try. I don't know why. You might try teaching them "pick you up" or whatever variation of words you want to use. We also say this EVERY time we pick them up, so they are always ready and are not surprised. They also know the word "stop" and we use this together with "pick you up" when we need them to come to us and be picked up.
