| First time yorkie/ pet owner Hello YT! I just recently purchased my yorkie from a petstore ( yes i know this is bad but im active duty military stationed in Japan and this was the only place i could think of )Her name is Marley and she is 5 months old. She is the sweetest thing ever. I took her to get chipped today and her last set of puppy shots until next year and it took all i had not to cry when they chipped her . I wouldnt want a needle that big sticking even me!! Well, when it was over and I got her home she was very forgiving and acted like nothing had even happened! Making me love her even more if thats even possible!! I wanted to ask about a few things. First off, if i could barely handle her getting chipped, i need some encouragement on getting her spayed! I want to get her spayed most DEFINITELY seeing as i have read about what types of problems can occur if i dont. I have just read that anesthesia(sp?) for small toy dogs can be dangerous at times. Also she has been doing very well for me with housebreaking in only the 5 days that i have had her. I have a schedule.. about 6am when i wake up b4 i start getting ready for work i take her out, then when i come home from lunch ( i keep her in a fairly big kennel with a bed and toys and piddle pad ), and then as soon as i get home.. once i am home for the evening she goes out like every 1 or 2 hours. Sometimes she doesnt even use the bathroom everytime, its just a little 20 minutes of adventure I try and give her cheerios and praise her for every time that she goes potty but she doesnt really go apes for cheerios and i have tried a small piece of apple and she didnt really care for that either. I was wondering if anyone knows of a safe treat that I could buy at my local supermarket for her so its really a reward when she goes! Also, how should i scold her when she starts biting to hard when we are playing ( my husband likes to play with her and lets her nibble at him but i dont like that, i think it teaches her to bite ) and when she starts chewing on things like blankets and electrical cords. I dont want to scare her but i want her to know i mean business. I say no firmly but she just shrugs it off and keeps going. I have bought her plenty of chew toys and i always give her a chew toy in place of what she was chewing on that was bad but sometimes is doesnt always work. Thanks again for all the advice that I have gotten in just reading these forums b4 I joined! Any advice about anything would be GREAT!!! |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk!! You will find a lot of very caring and supportive people here! Congrats on you new "baby" girl. What a cute name. Please post some pictures. I've had 3 yorkies in the past 30 years. I had my Abby spayed in February and she did just fine. The one I had before Abby, my precious little Kayla, was very little and she also did just fine. As far as treats go, I really don't know which ones are the best. I have heard that they really like liver treats. Good luck with your new little Marley. May you enjoy many happy years with her. Welcome to the wonderful world of being owned by a Yorkie! |

| Congrats on the new baby. I have a crate for Lexie, she is usually good about listening to me when I tell her no, don't bite, or Leave it, but when she doesn't listen, I put her in the crate for 3 -5 minutes, a little time out. This crate is also available to her for small naps, it has toys in it too for playing. If she gets too rowdy with Jazzie, I put her in the crate as well, sort of saying calm down. I read its good to do that at times to show them, its time to relax. With Jazzie I was so scared to get her spayed, I waited, postponed, then finally took her in, uughh, what a long day that was. I was relieved to hear the vet call and say, everything is okidoky. That night she was groggy, did not do much but sleep, I did put a syringe of water in her mouth to get her to drink something, and fed her a few dry food kibbles. The next day she was acting as if NOTHING happened! oooh my gosh . Of course I had to keep her from jumping, running after Zander, I could not believe how great she felt. Now I have to eventually get Lexie spayed, oooh, all that worrying all over again. For treats, mine like carrots, cheerios. If she doesn't seem impressed by the cheerios, just pet her, in her tickle spot, let her know you are soooo happy she is going potty outside! Lots of luck to you.

| Welcome to YT!! Congrats on your baby girl! I have 2 boys that are 4 & 6. I know it's boys vs girls, but Woody didn't get neutered until he was about 1 1/2, but chipped as soon as I got him, my heart broke Bogie was neutered as soon as we could (didn't want to deal with marking again) and was chipped while in surgery. As for treats, all ideas already posted are great - I like Charlie Bears, very light and airy and small! The boys think watermellon is the best though. With the biting and nibbling, we just say "Ooowww" in a calm but whiny voice, they stop immediatly. It has taken time, but it works for us. Good luck and wishes for many year of happiness!

| Congrats on your new baby. You are in for a world of love! Am I the only one who actually buys treats from a Pet store? LOL We got Nutro puppy treats that look like a turkey drumstick and broke off a piece for every successful potty. Tiki was actually pad trained when we got her at 10 weeks and took to outside potty very quickly. After about 6 months, she refused to use her potty pad and only wanted to go outside. Once in a while she goes during the night but very seldom. She goes as soon as we get up and the last thing at night, outside to go potty and then get her teeth brushed before bed. Her other good girl treats are Pupperoni that we buy at the Pet store or at Target or WalMart. These are her "good girl" treats and what we used to teach her all of her tricks. Her very favorite thing to chew on is her twisted string rope toy chewie. We usually can find them at the Dollar store with 3 to a pack. These are very small ones made of cotton string, just perfect for little Yorkie mouths. One we found was a bit bigger but actually has dental floss in it so that is good for her teeth too. We only caught her chewing on a blanket one time and scolded her with "No Tiki, No", very firmly and put her away from it. She never touched it or anything she shouldn't chew on again. She has a round dog bed full of chew toys from the chewie ropes to stuffed toys. She doesn't like the rubber squeaky ones that smell so horrendous. We have bought some of them that were packaged but she wouldn't touch them. We soaked and washed them but still "nothing doing" for her so they went to our neighbors dogs. However Tiki's brother chews his blankets all of the time and he doesn't stop, even when she tucks the chewed spot away. He digs until he finds it. He tends to chew off bites and I told her that is not good for him to be swallowing a piece of fleece blanket so she is watching it more closely. Strange the diffrerence in these two siblings. They play together all of the time but she is a lady and he is a street fighter. Not really but he is very protective of those he loves. They were here one day and our pups were playing. Our neighbor brought her springer over to visit. She walked over by us as we were sitting under the canopy and when she got close to us, here came Buddy barking and growling, telling her to get away from us. She moved away and he was fine. No siree, no other dog is getting near my peeps! Too funny. Have so much fun with your baby! Tiki's Mom |

You know it is NOT spoiling, don't you? It is "well loved" My Tiki is very well loved and so are my grandkids. Being spoiled means they are usually bratty. But Well Loved is a whole different thing. Tiki's Mom, Myrna | |
