| Getting new puppy - male or female? Some of you might know that I lost my Dorkie yesterday. My daughters have arranged to buy me a Yorkie puppy. The breeder my girls are getting the puppy from has offered to let them have a female for the same price as a male. For some reason I had wanted a male but I really don't have a logical reason. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I have 3 daughters and only 1 son . One think I dislike about males is there marking and other dominating behaviors. I thought that if I nuetered him early enough that wouldn't be a problem; but, I was already beginning to see that behavior in my 10 wk old Dorkie. Male or female, I would still have the puppy fixed. I am just wanting a companion dog for myself since my children are all almost grown and I find myself home alone much of the time (my husband is a missionary and travels 3-4 monthes of the year.) What are some of your thoughts on gender? |

| Doolittle, My Dorkie Doolittle was only 10 weeks old. He died of Accute Renal Failure. His ultrasound looked fine, so apparently he got into something toxic. Since I always kept watchful eye on him, I think my husband probably dropped an advil in the utility room (where the puppy was kept and where the medicene cabinet is) and didn't pick it up. Whatever happened, we have new rules and are insituting new procedures for the new puppy to insure his/her safety. |

| I never wanted a male b/c I thought ALL males marked and humped We were getting 2 pups at the same time....Little did my husband know, I was looking for 2 sisters. Well, my search went on for months, I couldn't find 2 sisters I wanted...THEN I saw my TJ's pup picture and fell so in love with his cute face, and guess what...He had a Sister - JACK POT!!!! TJ was neutered at 7 months old. He is pee pad trained inside. He marks his heart content *OUTSIDE* - never has he peed inside other then on the pad. He doesn't hump either My next will def. be a male |

| I have heard that male dogs tend to become more attached to their female owners and female dogs tend to favor males, so if you're looking for a companion dog for yourself you may want a male. I'm not sure if this is accurate info though - does anyone know if there is any truth behind this? We have a 15 week old female puppy and she seems to follow my husband and I around equally. If she has to choose between the two of us to play/cuddle with, she usually chooses me - so I guess in our case it isn't true... I would go and meet all the puppies in person and more than likely one of them will stand out to you. I would go by personality more than sex.

| Aw I'm so sorry That is so sad. It's nice of your kids to want to get you a yorkie. I originally wanted a female but my Coco actually picked me. He is the light of my life. The best little guy. He's pad trained, goes outside too. Never ever marks. He was neutered at 6mo. I also have 2 girls I got after him. They certainly are in charge here. He just goes with the flow. Good luck in making your decision.

| I too would buy more based on the dog's personality than generalizations about its sex. One point that's not often brought up about male vs. female: it's much easier to clothe a female. Our boy Buster has to wear undersized sweaters to keep warm or else he'll pee on them; a female's anatomy avoids this problem. |

YT Addict | I would meet the puppies too. My Finley picked me out and I also have a female on the way. When I talked with my breeder, she said that male are lovey then the females, but her females are lovers too. SO I think that it depends on what you want. If you fix your puppy early then he shouldn't mark or hump..(well mine never have!) |

| I don't think this is true. It really depends on the dogs personality. My girls are mushes. You can't say all males are lovey or all females are lovey. I have 2 girls and 1 boy and all 3 can't get enough love'n.

| I have one of each. My female..Chloe...is all girl. Dainty, delicate, prissy. She was born a princess. My boy...Milo..Is all boy! He's a dare devil! Afraid of nothing! And hates being groomed. He is mama's boy for sure!! Especially when it's nap time, or if he gets hurt. They are wonderful...I couldn't give either up for the world! They're my furbabies! So sorry to hear about your dorkie

| My husband and kids purposely stayed away from doing much with Doolittle unless I was busy or gone so that he would be more attached to me. I'm sure it will be the same with the new puppy so hopefully male or female will bond equally. I'm leaning toward a female but still haven't made up my mind. I have a growing list of names for both. |
