| New Yorkie Mom I have a yorkie girl named Maya...she is 3 months old and I have a few questions. 1st I just changed her feedings from 3 times a day to 2 times because she is 6.5 lbs already and the vet said she is "hefty"...she is only pooping like 2 times a day rather than 3 like when I was feeding her 3 times a day. Will she only poop only when she eats? 2nd question...her roots of her hair on her head are turning white...does this mean she will have white hair? Also if anyone can give me some house breaking tips I would really appreciate it....I think im doing ok on the peeing but its a little harder with the pooping. Even when we are watching her she will have an accident sometimes and she does it so fast its hard to stop her before she finishes. Thanks !!

Puppies will typically poop after they eat, however, even with treats and food, they will poop. Fiona used to poop once a day, and as she got older and would eat more frequently, she will poop twice a day. Yorkies coats change a lot, Fiona just lost all her black puppy hair since I cut her, and now she is silver and tan, so it all depends on what your babies hair will grown into, since she is still young. If your baby is playing a lot, and drinking a lot, i would take her out on the hour every hour. I was lucky with Fiona since she was about 3 months old when I got her, and pretty much crate/ potty trained! My question to you, is that are you crate training? I am a firm believer in crate training. If you are, potty training can be easy. I used to be a vet tech, and i would give puppy talks to new owners with puppies, so here are some tips for you; first thing in the morning, your baby is obviously going to have to go out. if you are crate training, take her out of the crate and go outside. obviously she will probably have to do both things, so what i do with Fiona is I came up with a command word- please know that if you have other people in your household you need to all use the SAME command word, and you are only going to say this word while they are in the act of doing something, not before, not after. So when Fiona would squat and pee pee, i would say " good potty, good girl, good pee pee" and then reward her a lot, if i was outside with her for a good 15 min and she does one over the other, i would bring her inside, put her in the crate for 10 min and try again, and she would go. being consist is the key to potty training, now its to the point, when she needs to go out, she will stand by the door and just bark at me, and when i take her out, i'll say take a squat, and she will go. Good luck, I hope this helped!

| Hi Dara Thx for the advice.....as far as crate training her I do keep her in the crate overnight and in the morning she will pee & poop out side with no problem. The rest of the day if I cant be with her I mostly keep her in my bathroom upstairs rather than the crate. She seems to be doing well with walking outside and being on a leash. She has a bed to lay on and water in the bathroom...I keep a wee wee pad in the bathroom and she has learned to use them as well as going out side ( my bathroom is very big and I put the wee wee pad all the way on the opposite side from her bed and she goes potty on the pad ). Am I doing the wrong thing by letting her stay in the bathroom instead of the crate during the day? I know by her having the wee wee pads in the bathroom she does not have to hold it....she just gets up and goes. I would like to learn more or less when she needs to poop. Its hard to tell.....she is always sniffing!!

| Hey there and welcome to YT.....sounds like you have a nice big girl on your hands. What size were the parents and the expected adult weight of your baby? At 3 months I am surprised she is eating that much food. What type of food do you have her on? You are leaving her in the bathroom at 3 months old all day with no food. I have found that some of them will sit in front of the dry food bowl all day and munch and that really puts the weight on them. I have personally never liked crates. They are a great idea if used properly but most people seem to use them as a jail not a training aid. I could not imagine leaving any of my animals in a cage for hours on end how sad for the lonely dog. I potty train with pee pads when they wake up put them on it or take them outside, about 20 minutes after they eat same thing, But babies can't hold it for long and when they have to go they have to go. Mine sleep in my bed with a diaper on. Have patients it takes time but if you keep doing and saying the same thing before you no it she will be potty trained. Good Luck! |
