| yorkie obedience training Hi, I'm sorta a "newbie" here. Squeaky and Swiper are my 1 1/2 year old yorkies (We have a Bichon also, but he says he is my husband's dog). Squeaky is my problem pup. She says "no one is gonna be the boss of her"!! What to do?? I've been trying submission training with her by laying her on her back (and rubbing her tummy, but firmly trying to keep her in place). She'll have none of it. Any advise or good training book (for yorkies) recommendation? Help! Please! |

| I'm not sure I understand. Is she having issues with being overly aggressive and you fear she will hurt someone or are you talking about teaching her commands like sit, lay down, etc.? Have you enrolled in an obediance class?

| I never like the "alpha roll" for dogs. I don't want my dogs to be scarred of me, just want them to respect me. IMO this technique instills fear as wolves control each other using this and the pack members seem to fear the alpha male and female. Do you ever watch Animal Planet? It has a great animal trainer on It's Me or the Dog. She's amazing and her techniques work. I don't think she has any books out yet, but she surely will soon. Her show is on Saturday nights and some times through out the week. I'd check out your local listings. If you don't get AP try a web search to see if you can view any of her shows. Hope this helps.

| I believe in the "pack leader" theory. Its not an abusive or aggressive role - but rather a firm and confident role. Being the pack leader is about teaching the rules and being consistent about enforcing them. Inconsistency leads to confusion. Once the dog understands the rules and obeys the rules, everyone lives in harmony. Not sure your thread is about rules of the home - but rather you want to show your affection and your baby isn't having it?? In that case, reward for good behavior. For instance, I didn't want Bailey to run away from me when I wanted to pick her up. So, I gave her a treat when I picked her up. After the training phase, I gradually weaned her off the treats. Good luck!!
