| Introduction Hello! I've been lurking at YT since I got my Yorkie pup, Crumb, about a month ago. He turns 6 months on the 9th, weighs about 3.5 lbs, and is a delightful addition to our home. He joins his sister, a poodle/terrier mix I rescued some 10 years ago. Cosmo is 11 years old and Crumb has been a good dose of medicine for her. They seem to just love each other and that's a surprise because Cosmo was never so keen on other dogs. The more I read here, the more concerned I get about potential health problems. I plan to get him neutered soon - he just started marking and his testes are descended - but also want to get him tested for liver shunt. He doesn't have any symptoms, but reading the threads here are a bit scary. Anyway, thanks for this awesome forum. I'll try to post a pic in the pic forum. I hope to learn more and be the best Yorkie Dad I can be. - Kevin |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Welcome, Kevin! I'm right there with you on being concerned after reading on the site. We don't even have our Yorkie yet (countdown less than a month...woo hoo) but we were already becoming "concerned" about the apparent fragility of Yorkies. I've about decided though that it's because this is such a great site for research on problems and patient help from other owners that we see such a profusion of issues. At least that's what my husband and I have surmised. I know that we will be so grateful to have a site to come to with questions and concerns. We will be venturing into unknown territory for both of us since we haven't had dogs since we were children and neither of us has ever had a house dog. Honestly though? The longer I read and post here, the more I see that the greatest common factor in all the posts is not the issues, but the love of Yorkies. I almost wish each person who sells a Yorkie would pass along the URL of this site along with the other papers they give new owners. Again, welcome to Yorkietalk. You're really going to like it here! |

| Welcome to YT and the wonderful world of being owned by a Yorkie! Although I understand your concerns from reading some of the posts about the health issues of Yorkies, please try to just enjoy your puppy and give it lots of love. It's true that Yorkies can have certain health problems, but that doesn't mean that every Yorkie experiences those problems. I have had 3 Yorkies in the past 30 years. My first one lived to be 16 years old, my second one lived to be almost 14. Both of them were very healthy their entire life. I now have a new baby that is 6 months old and is at this point, just fine. If you do research on other breeds, you would probably find that there are certain health issues with them also. I'm sure there are a lot of people on this site that also have had healthy babies. You just have to love them lots, and enjoy them. You will really like this site. There are a lot of very caring people here! So please try to relax a little and enjoy! |

| Thanks for the warm welcome! It's nice to know there are experienced Yorkie people here. I've never had a dog this small and there's a steep learning curve. Toy - we like the name too and it seems to fit. It took about 10 days to settle on 'Crumb', after trying out different ones, like 'Tid bit'. Abby - Yes, relax and enjoy. That's just what we're doing. Laid back here. He's such an entertaining little guy. At the dog park he hops when he runs. I keep him leashed most of the time, but when it's safe to do so, he's set free to run a bit. Luckily, he comes when he's called. We keep an eye out for falcons, believe it or not, and he's never more than 15 feet away from me. The advantage to having him with his older sister, Cosmo, is that she's teaching him all her good habits. That old girl is a perfect companion animal and he follows her every move. She's taught him where to potty, to eat small amounts of vegetable, to only bark when alarmed. And for the first time in 10 years, she has company during those times no humans are home. No more single child guilt! Again, thanks for the welcome. I'll participate as time allows and keep you updated. Good luck Toy with your new one! - Kevin |

| Welcome to YT Kevin! Love having all the men on YT! Crumb - what a great name. So glad to hear your older girl was welcoming to a new pup - I've always wondered how my 2 would do (their 7) - especially my girl
