Senior Yorkie Talker | cute but strange sleeping behavior When Bentley is falling asleep in my lap he does the strangest thing. If my lap is covered in a fuzzy blanket, he holds a corner of the blanket in his mouth and then with his front paws, he "kneads" the blanket, kind of like what a cat does when they are trying to make their spot. Its so cute to watch him but i wonder why he does this. is this similar to their behavior when they are nursing? i have a video of him doing it but i wouldnt be able to figure out how to upload it if my life depended on it but if you can picture him lying on his side with the blanket in his teeth and kinda "pushing" the blanket with his front paws...why does he do this?? could it just be a comfort thing?

♥ Catherine My Love ♥ Donating Member | Sounds like "nursing" behavior to me. It is a comfort thing. Be flattered, it means your baby is completely comfortable with you! I have seen puppies doing "nursing" behavior all the way up to 6 months old before they let it go (like thumb sucking in a skin baby, haha).

| Just out of curiosity, I am in no way trying to offend or start any trouble, but can I ask, how old was Bentley when he left him mom? I've "heard" that those taken too soon will continue to do this but can find no hard facts to back that up. Just speculation, theories and opinions. So when I hear people say their dogs do this, I'm always curious.

| Piper did this nursing behavior with her stuff dog until she was about 8 months old. I do know that Piper was weaned at 6 weeks and separeted from her mother with her litter mates. The breeder lost one of her dogs after birth and she used Piper's mother to nurse the babies. Poor Piper and her sisters became orphans.
