| I'm new: getting Yorkie Puppy tomarrow! Hi everyone. I'm Lisa. I'm the very proud mommy of a 18-week-old Maltese, Rocco. Tomarrow my sister and I are going to see a breeder about adopting a 10-week-old Yorkie puppy. I want this puppy for myself, but I had a hard enough time talking my boyfriend into Rocco! So will just be the very loving Auntie. I have to admit I am a little nervous. Rocco was only 14 ounces when I got him and we had a tough time of it! He was hypoglycemic and not properly weaned at all. I got him from a puppy store (I know, bad idea!) but at the time I had no idea it was so bad. I was told he was 7 weeks old, but the vet guessed him to be younger. On the second morning I had him he had a seizure and his head was turned all the way around. I thought he was going to die. It was awful. He didn't have any teeth and was not weaned. Poor baby. I had to feed him emergency milk and then special canned food every two hours for about 3 weeks. But we got through it all and now Rocco is a healthy, although tiny, bouncy little puppy and the LOVE of my life! My sister and I have been doing lots of research but we would love to hear any advice from other Yorkie-mommies! I have lots of pictures of my hope-to-be new little neice. I do not know if we are allowed to post pictures so I will just put the links: http://images.andale.com/f2/114/104/...0488_Coco4.jpg http://images.andale.com/f2/114/104/...1447_Coco3.jpg http://images.andale.com/f2/114/104/...1563_Coco2.jpg http://images.andale.com/f2/114/104/...1563_Coco2.jpg http://images.andale.com/f2/114/104/...0738_Coco1.jpg http://images.andale.com/f2/114/104/...18298_Coc6.jpg http://images.andale.com/f2/114/104/...15209_Coc5.jpg Thanks! | Congrats on the new niece. Maybe after a while you can get a little yorkie for yourself too - after Rocco has grown up a little bit maybe. Good luck to you and your sister with the new addition to the family!!

| Welcome and GOOD LUCK!!!!! When you visit the breeder BE SURE to look around and don't be afraid to ask questions. Ask to speak to others who hve received puppies from ths breeder. What kind of health guarantee do they offer. Do the do their own shots/worming??? Has this puppy (or any puppies) been seen by a vet? Look at this puppy closely!!!! Look for a good set of teeth (too few means the puppy is much too young). What is the puppy feeding? What kind of food do they feed (PLEASE...not some generic puppy chow mixed with alot of water!!). What age is the puppy and is it still with mom? (Weaning and removing mom too soon is a bad practice).... I know I and others could go on and on about this...Do take the time and don't be overwhelmed with the emotions of a beautiful puppy (I promise you, she will be BEAUTIFUL!!!!) You have found a great site for some really great info and help. Let us know how it goes. |

| Well, we picked up Coco yesterday from the "breeders." Unfotunately I use that term loosly. What is the deal with dog breeders? How come it is so hard to find good ones? Turns out, we were not able to see the parent dogs, because they were her sister's dogs. Kinda confused as to why the puppies were being sold at one sisters house, but bred at anothers. We did see pictures of the parents. Several pictures so I think they are the real parents, and they were really healthy looking dogs and the house looked really nice. She did go into another room twice while we were there. The first time she went was to get some food for us to take. Coco was eating Purina Puppy Chow (YES! It was watered down in her bowl! Whomever asked that, how did you know?) but we will be weaning her to eat Natural Choice Ultra, as that is what Rocco eats. I only heard one dog barking. It was coming from her bedroom, and I asked who it was and she said that was HER male yorkie but she did not offer to bring him out. She was really really sick- bad flu- and she said the dog wanted to lay on her and play and she didn't have the energy. I found this a bit strange because if I were sick and was just going to lounge on the couch all day, I couldn't imagine anything better than having my puppy and my cats lay all over my and get all cozy! So.....then she goes in that other room again and comes back with this teeny tiny poodle. I'm sorry but I was NOT impressed. Why did she have this dog if she raises yorkies? It was only 1lb and she said it was 4 months and would only be 2lbs. She called it a party poodle and then it had diharea. It was time to get out of there! Yes, of course we took the puppy. The place was questionable, but it was clean and tidy and the puppy looks very healthy. She has a full set a nice strong white teeth, very thick coat of black and tan hair, clear eyes, no cough or mucas coming from her nose at all, pink tounge. Plus- and this made me kinda sad remembering Rocco at this age- she was so STURDY! It's hard to explain this but Rocco could barely hold himself up with his legs. His knees slid in and out, his little feet were like feathers. Even now, his teeth are nothing like this dog's. I will try to take pics of Coco today if Sarah brings her over. She lives in the apartment upstairs and one over. Here is my Rocco about two weeks ago: http://images.andale.com/f2/114/104/...7_DSCF3112.JPG http://images.andale.com/f2/114/104/...4_DSCF3119.JPG http://images.andale.com/f2/114/104/...0856060_A1.jpg This was him at the puppy store: http://images.andale.com/f2/114/104/...2_DSCF2704.JPG http://images.andale.com/f2/114/104/...0_DSCF2694.JPG The day we got home: http://images.andale.com/f2/114/104/...5276_Bath2.jpg http://images.andale.com/f2/114/104/...7403_Bath5.jpg And trying to nurse the cat, Tink, a couple days later. | How Cute! I love the yorkies when they are so small and babys. They are so fun. Be sure to get to a vet asap since you need to have her checked out to be sure that she is ok. This is especially important since you already are questioning the breeder. I suspect that there is something strange going on since the breeder was acting so odd. It does seem wierd that she would have the puppies and the parents were at her sisters. Why wouldn't the sister have them? Anyway, get her to a vet. Also, here are some tips I found useful during the first few weeks with my pup....First, as much as you want to play with her all the time, they need their rest, so make sure to only play for a few hours and then it is nap time. If they don't get enough rest, they can spend all their stored energy and get hypoglycemic. Second, be sure to make sure the puppy has plenty of food and water at all times. Also have some nutri-stat paste on hand. You should give the pup a little bit (about an inch) anytime she plays for a long time or if she doesn't eat a lot. Aside from that just enjoy! Congrats to you and your sister and baby Coco! Joanne |

| Yes, the whole day yesterday seems sureal. We drove out to the boonies in the snow....it should have been a three hour drive, but I must have been speeding because we got their almost an hour early, lol! But that was good- we caught her off gaurd. She wasn't expecting us until noon at the earliest and we got their at 11. She was in her pajamas, and she really did have the flu-hope I don't catch it! So yeah it was weird, but then as we left, she popped her head out the door and said, "Cover her head! She's just like a newborn baby!" So she really did care about her. I have the Nutri-cal and Karo syrup on hand, Rocco doesn't need it anymore. Although he sure loves the nutrical! It's his favorite treat!!! Sarah is hogging Coco today, she hasn't come downstairs to visit. That's OK, they need time to bond. Sarah is 21 and I am 23 but Sarah is not the most responsible girl in the world. She is, however, very loving and wonderful with children and animals. I really think adopting Coco is going to be good for her. She is home all the time, so Coco will have lots of attention and Sarah will learn how responsibility and hopefully get on a schedual. We all know how babies (even furbabies) need scheduals! Thanks so much everyone for all your advice and well-wishes. I SO wish the Maltese forum was as welcoming as you all are. Hugs~Lisa |
