| Harness questions Ok, all the research says harnesses over collars so we've bought Mia a tiny little kitten harness for now. My question is, do you leave your yorkie's harness on all the time? How long before they get used to it and does anyone else have a bell on there's? Mia is not a happy girl right now, she's not liking the harness at all but we're playing and getting used to it. I'm just wondering if I should leave it on all the time. It would make the potty training easier if she was already harnessed and we could just whip out the door...... What do you do? |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Both my dogs are microchipped and wear collars w/ i.d. tags at all times. The collars, of course, are NOT for leashing - I use a harness for that. For my small guy (3 lb. adult), I do put a bell on him bc he needs to be "heard" for his safety. When he was a puppy, I would take his collar off when no one was home - then put it on immed. when we got home, so we could hear him. Once he became a little bit bigger and less vulnerable - I left the collar on at all times for add'l i.d. safety. The deal w/ collars is that you cannot fit them according to how we fit larger dogs (the one or 2 finger clearance). You really should only be able to fit your pinky finger btwn the collar and the dog's neck. Also, I do use a breakaway collar.

| It would be a good idea to leave it on her in intervals so she can get used to the feel of having it on so that when it comes time to take her outside she's not busy fussing over the harness instead of taking care of business. I would not leave it on her all the time and never unsupervised. I think the bell is an excellent idea for safety and the bonus cuteness factor. Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

| I keep my babies harnesses on all day and when they need to go out it's just clipping on the leash and go... I keep it this way until they are potty trained! You never know when you need to make a mad dash to the door! I take them off before they go into their crates at night. It's part of our routine. They know once it comes off it's bed time

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | you can leave the harness on all day as long as it is fitted properly. it does make things easier during potty training so you can quickly leash her and go outside. I have a collar on my 4.5lb yorkie all day long, every day since she was a little pup. the collar is fitted properly and i have NEVER had a problem with her. She is almost 3 years old now. At first i had a collar with a bell on to be able to hear her but now she just has her tags on which make hte same amount of noise. having a collar or harness on 24/7 is not a bad thing if done properly. If you are the least bit unsure about it then do not leave them on when the pup is unsupervised just to be safe.

| I wouldn't leave it on all the time while she is trying to get use to it. Make putting the harness on fun, so she can relate a nummy treat or a fun walk to the harness. Each time you put it on her, give her an extra good treat.
