| My "friend" got a puppy & I lost a friend Ok… So my “friend” has been wanting one of my Yorkie puppies, but she waited to long to tell me she wanted one and by the time she decided she wanted one, they were all spoken for. So after searching for a day for a Yorkie, she decided to drive 4 hours to get a 10 week pug puppy she had never even seen pictures of, knows nothing about the breeder she was purchasing from, but she didn’t care, she wanted a puppy and she wanted one yesterday! Apparently all my preaching about finding a responsible breeder, asking a ton of questions (that I even gave her) and the puppy that’s right for her didn’t matter. So, the next day at work she emails me to tell me she is going to bring her over so I can see her. (Keep in mind, for those who don’t know, I have five eight week old puppies at my house) She also said how bad she felt for her little pug puppy because she was so dirty and had to give her a bath right when they got home. I emailed her back and said, “Not to be mean, just thinking about what’s best for my puppies, I don’t think it would be a good idea for you to bring her over because she hasn’t been seen by a vet yet and my puppies aren’t vaccinated yet.” (They aren’t vaccinated because I felt they were too small to start their shots at 6 weeks, so we are going this weekend) She emailed back and said, “She has had her shot already” I couldn’t help but laugh. She learned nothing from me and believed everything this woman told her. The lady told her puppies only needed one shot and she already got it. She wasn’t given any vaccination records, no health guarantee, she wasn’t even told what kind of food the puppy was on! Nothing, just the puppy! To top it all off, she has no intensions of taking the puppy to a vet anytime soon. So, needless to say, I emailed her back and she didn’t like what I had to say. I told her I thought she was impulse buying because she had the itch for a puppy. She wasn’t thinking about the puppy growing up to be a dog, and the fact that she is responsible for this dog for 10-15 years. She should have done research about the breed and the breeder. She should have asked a lot of questions and she should have found a vet before she purchased the puppy. She hasn’t emailed me back and we haven’t talked or text since, it’s been 4 days and that’s not normal for us……….. So, do you think I was being too harsh? Or would you have done the same thing? P.S. She has never had a dog before and I’m sure after the first week of picking up accidents, she will be over the excitement of a puppy. I’m afraid this is a prime example of how dogs end up in shelters and abandon on the side of the road. Moral of the story: A PUPPY IS A LIFE TIME COMMITMENT AND NEEDS TO BE TAKEN VERY SERIOUSLY!!!!!!!!

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | I would have done the Exact same thing.. No outside dogs have come into my house since the yorkie jacks were born.. they just got the first vaccine, they are NOT leaving my house until they are 12 weeks of age.. and you are right, that is how dogs wound up in the shelters.. hugs, Carmen in nj |

| Thank you! I really appreciate it! This is really hard for me because I recently moved from Michigan to Illinois and she was my only friend here. I sometimes feel like, If I would have just let her stinkin puppy come over, I would still have a friend here. But I really appreciate the reassurance that I made the right decision.

| You were NOT being harsh...you were being honest and telling her the truth. Most people hate being told they are irresponsible and hate even worse to have to admit it's the truth. You were doing what you had to do to look out for the best interest for YOUR puppies and there is NO shame in that! Don't worry, I'm sure an "I told you so" is looming somewhere in the near future for you. |

| You did a very good thing by telling her what someone needed too! I'm sorry, but friends should be able to tell each other things like this and still be able to be friends. If she was a good friend I'm sure she'll realize that you only have the best of intentions! She really needs to read up on the importance of vaccinations and certainly about taking care of dogs in general. Sound like she is really being irresponsible and careless. I'm sure in a couple days when the responsibilities of dog ownership set in she'll be running to you for help!

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Your 100% right! Good fro you, putting your pups health before anything else. I'm sorry your friend did'nt learn anything from you. I think she will be out of the "rose colored glassses" phase darn quick, and could benefit from someone with knowledge about caring for a dog for a lifetime. I'm sure you'll be hearing from her soon...Stand your ground, and good luck....Keep us posted...interesting.

I agree 110%. Don't be so hard on yourself, you are protecting your puppies. Its frustrating when you try to teach/inform someone something and they don't listen for what ever reason. Best of luck to you!

| The first thing that came to my mind is that you (and your puppies) dodged a bullet here. This woman sounds impulsive and immature...and pig-headed, too. Aren't you glad none of your little Yorkie babies will end up at her mercy? The second thing that entered my mind was that she doesn't sound like much of a friend...at least not in the true sense of friendship. I suspect, in the long run, this whole episode will turn out to have been for the best.

| Bless you for putting your babies health first. Anyone knows you can't bring a puppy around any dog that hasn't had all proper shots. Good for you for protecting your puppies. I think she is being unreasonable to think you would jeoperdize your babies. They are too vulnerable right now. I wouldn't even allow people around them without washing their hands, let alone a puppy you (or she) knows nothing about.

| You absolutely did the right thing. With 5 little puppies at your place and no vacc's done yet..you may have just saved their lives (or hundreds/thousands of dollars in vet bills) by not allowing her over. If she was any kind of a friend, she would understand that and not WANT to put your puppies at risk, or her own for that matter! I know that it was probably hard for you to set your friend straight, but sometimes people need to hear those kind of things. Obviously noone else was telling her! Maybe just send her a text and say, "I'm sorry if I upset you, but I only said what I did because I CARE".
