| How do you teach Yorkies to get down steps? My yorkie, Maggie, is 16 weeks and adorable. She can bolt up any amount of stairs! HOWEVER, she can't seem to figure out how to come back down! Any suggestions? Thanks! |

| When we first got Callie she didnt want go up or down the stairs which was nice because we didnt have to gate it off but eventualy when she got a little older and a little bigger she went up them with no problem but wouldnt come down and would bark and cry a few times for us to come get her and bring her down well it was cute at first then it got old so I got really excited and offered her a treat to come down the stairs and it took her awhile the first few times and she did it akwardly but eventualy got the hang of it and sense shes been potty trained the stiars arnt gated anymore and she loves to run up there and hide her bones lol

| When we moved to a townhouse with stairs Meka use to love to run up, but was a little hesitant at first about going down. So, I would go down a few steps ahead of her and she'd follow me. At first, she was a little cautious and went one by one... but after a while she was flying up and down the stairs with no prob

| She'll figure it out in time, & particularly if she has a reason (her own). You could try one or two low steps for starters, to give her the concept & to build her confidence. Put a treat on top, & let her climb up for it. Put a treat at the bottom, with her at the top, & let her go down the step(s) for the treat. If you think she's still "fragile" wait a while.

| I would let Sophie practice going down the stairs by carrying down until the last two or three steps. I would put her on the steps and then call her and praise her as she learned to how to climb down. That took about 3 days - now she is a mad woman and runs in front of me zig zagging down the stairs. Funny thing is Sophie will only climb down carpeted stairs. Wood stairs, forget it, she looks up at me like "okay I am not doing this... carry me Mom"

| JoJo treads carefully on wooden stairs but flys down carpeted stairs. They can slip easily on the wooden ones. I coaxed him into coming down the stairs by putting a very small treat on each stair. I also sat down a couple of stairs to catch him in case he slipped. Maggie will get the hang of it quickly. |

| I live in an apartment and we live upstairs, well when my li'l TayTay was one and it was on her birthday she feel down twenty steps and hit the ground hard she could not move her back legs for at least 30 min, now she is going to be 3 in July and never went down the stairs again, she waits for me to carry her down. She will not go down no more no matter what I try, she scares me if am at the bottom and she wants me she will get to the edge and spin around. I don't think she will ever go down the steps again. I don't know what to do. |

| OMG OP!!! ALL these are good advise. We just got bk from our ski trip. Our condo was tri level, Dudley lives in a single story FL home. My Dh taught him to go UP then DOWN all in 3 days... Going up by tossing hius fav toy 3-4 steps up at a time till he got the hang of it. Coming down was like other said, it can vary, get yourself down a few step from him by enticing him w/ treat or toy then gradually working your way to the full set....mine picked this up in a few days.. when we got back home he was looking for stairs...we put a set in front of our sofa so he run up/down at his will. So our next goal is to take them away when we don't want him up there (when we have comapny) and teach him when stairs are present, he's free up on sofa, when there are not there, he is not welcome. therefore, teaching him another "trick" HA!! Ihope the joke is not on me!!!!!

| I never taught Bella how to go up and down them, she learned entirely on her own in time. It was cute to see her progression. |

| Yorkies and stairs YORKIE'S OR ANY OTHER PUPPIES ARE NOT SUPPOSE TO CLIMB UP STAIRS, AND CERTAINLY NOT SUPPOSED TO COME DOWN STAIRS! These dogs are our babies, and we are suppose to take care of them so they will last a long time. I know you don't understand what is happening. The Poor babies are afraid of falling down the stairs. Would you want your toddler climbing up and down stairs. This is why we have doggie gates to stop them from climbing up stairs. If your steps are wide enough you should put a board the same color as the steps on the side wall for them to run up and down, that is if you are to lazy to pick them up and realize that they are your baby. When a dog climbs up and down stairs, no matter what kind it is, they can develop hip-displaisa. When your dog gets older it will pain you to see them hurting in their joints from repetitive climbing up and down from stairs. So if you love your puppies, don't think it's cute for them to climb stairs. |
