| What's your take on all the recent Puppy Mill busts? I am so overjoyed to see so many puppy mills being busted lately. But then so saddened to see the conditions these dogs are in & to see the conditions they have lived in. Why do you think so many are happening right now? There was the huge one out in Washington state last month, then the ones in Missouri, Tenn & NC Part of me thinks that one bust spurs someone else on to report another puppy mill, and so on. But maybe there is more going on. Are elected officials & authorities taking animal abuse & neglect more seriously? If you don't know what I'm referring to you need to read our News section Yorkie News & Site Announcements - YorkieTalk.com Forums - Yorkshire Terrier Community I am also excited about the stories I have been seeing about crackdowns on these people - the new legislation making animal cruelty a felony in Arkansas. Seeing someone sentenced to serious jail time in Missouri. Los Angeles cracking down.

| I think its great that these horrid mills are finally getting busted! I dont think that the fines/penalities in some cases are strong enough.(like the guy with 1000 dogs and he still gets to keep 250) Thats rediculas!!! What I am worried about, as are all reputable, responsible breeders, is the wording on all the legislation being introduced in almost all the states, much of it spurred on by peta and H$U$. They seem to lump mills, hobby/exhibitor breeders and bybers all in the same boat. They feel that a breeder is a breeder is a breeder. Cut and dried. Most non-breeders do not think of the ramifications if these bills are passed worded the way they are.Non-breeders dont seem to understand what rights will be taken away from the people who are so very passionate about their specific breed.

| It is good to see the laws changing, that is the most important thing steming from the recent busts. I think the public is becoming more aware of the cruelty of puppy mills, also the younger generation(high school+) is playing a major role in educating each other and loved ones about animal cruelty. The internet and public forums are a HUGE help in educating people about this issue also. Sadly, internet also helps puppy mills mask themselves and lets "breeders" often falsely advertise themselves. There are more vegetarian and vegan people now than ever and learning about that type of lifestyle kind of goes hand in hand with animal rights. (not always, I am not speaking for anyone but myself) Every little bit helps, education is key!

I agree with you here, and it's so important to pass good laws that don't shut down quality breeders. So many of us want to pass any law, but some of these laws actually are better for puppy mill breeders than they are for an individual breeder, for example I read something about one bill that said if you had more than 6 dogs, they must be kept in separate facility. This just seems to hurt individual small breeders, and of course has no impact on the puppy mill breeder. Heck, many of our members have 6 dogs, and they aren't even breeders! I just want to add, I truly believe that the Oprah show caused a lot of regular people to become aware of the problem, and Pennsylvania got the most attention from the show, and the governor has made a great deal of effort to get bills passed in his state, and these things have a domino effect.

But in any case, if you are a lover of the breed, I'm afraid that there will ALWAYS be PURE BRED animals in rescue beyond my lifetime. So don't worry you will always be able to have a yorkie!

Out of curiousity, how many does one need to have for a breeding "program"? I really have no idea and I am NOT interested in breeding, I own altered pets. Just want to ask so I don't offend anyone by posting something ignorant down the line to a breeder! Thanks!

| I hate to see the conditions these poor dogs are in - it truly hurts my heart. On the other hand, I am thrilled to hear of all these busts because that is 50, 100, 300, etc dogs that are now getting a chance to live the life they have always deserved.

| Thanks! I read your post and thought maybe there is a guideline I am not aware of and, I didn't want to come across as rude!

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Well I certainly didn't notice anything rude about your post, I think most state laws are more concerned with the maximum number of dogs, and some states have tried to define the word "breeder" as anyone who sells over a certain number of dogs each year.

I hope that rescues go out of style because they are no longer needed, that is my sincere wish, not to always have them full of animals. legislation is the starting point, there are plenty of people out there that will stand up for for their right to breed to standard, once the bill is smoothed out into an acceptable law I'm sure you will still be able to find the quality of dog you are looking for. If for some reason you can not, then take comfort knowing that there are hundreds of thousands less dogs suffering in mills and breeders "back yards" because the law got tough on everyone.

But really thank you for your input, I have NO CLUE about breeding so I don't want to offend the breeders on here. They offer so much wisdom to people and I have a lot of respect for them!

| I hope that number can be kept to a reasonable amount, I know that if there were no breeders that I would not have my babies to love, I am not anti breeding. Just Anti Cruelty There is a fine line that needs to be drawn and I hope that in the months to come that some sense can be made out of breeders/puppymills. I am confident that with persistence in writing to our Representatives that hard work and heart will prevail and laws will change soon.
