| My puppy hides food Do any of your babies do this? My boy hides food all over the house (he'll be 6 months in a few days and this is a new thing for him). Why??? It's not like there will be no food later, on the contrary, I leave the food out 2-3 hours some times more because I forget. They get 3 meals per day plus treats (he's still in training). Most of the time, I throw the food out because they prefer treats. In short, I don't let them go hungry at all. But my boy is fanatical about finding hiding places for storing his food. When I discover one of his hiding places and clean it out, he quickly finds a new one. Could it be that he remembers when I picked up their food after a half hour when they wouldn't eat (suggested by someone in the forum and I tried it a couple of times)? No problem now, in fact I think it's hilarious watching him labor over it, but come Summer I know I'll be crying because of the fat bugs taking up residency in my house. What am I doing wrong What would you do? |

| My Sadie Mae always hid food too and she had her kibble available to her 24/7. I think it's just a stronger instinct in some to have a stash of food hidden away. I'm not sure what you can do other then to watch closely when you feed him so that he can't bury any.

| Mine does the exact same thing.. and as she has food available 24/7!! She seems to be doing it less so maybe its just a stage im not sure??>?> but she doesnt just take it to one place... she gets a piece and takes it to the rug in the kitchen then all over my living room floor.. and her food pretty much blends right in with the color of my carpet..So we are constantly stepping on bits of food.. haha sooo i know what your going through .. good luck and hopefully its just a stage!!!! |

| Can you feed him in an enclosed area where he can't hide anything? Like inside a playpen or something? Then when feeding time is over, remove both food and dog?

| Mine did this too up until recently, not sure why. he was 4.5 when he started and he seems to have quit. he's now 8mo. He still does ocassionally with treats, not near as much as he used to. Maybe a phase. But it is cute! He does however, run around the house w/ a nylabone sometimes whimpering b/c he can't hid it fast enough or can't find the right spot...Not sure what that's about i just tell him, "if i want it I'll just take it so chill" THAT DOESN'T WORK

| Daisy is 5 yrs old and she still hides treats. I don't mind so much if she hides them in the house but she wants to take them outside and hide them and then she wants to go outside all night long in the cold to check on them. I have a rule now... no hiding treats outside in the winter!

| My mom's dog does that, she hides her treats and then later goes and finds them.

| Mine hides his treats all the time. Sometimes he'll take his bully stick and hide it in the corners of our living room, and we watch him try to bury it with the "invisble dirt"...it's so adorable and funny! |

| Ahhh, I feel much better, thanks. I thought I was alone on this one. I thought that somehow I must be doing something wrong and being a bad mommy . Against the vet's advise, I leave the food out for long periods because I need them to eat. I'm glad to see that some of you do the same Putting him in one enclosed area while he eats is not an option any more since I stored the playpen a while back and they got so used to roaming around freely. I'm afraid that if I limit him now, he'll think it's punishment and besides, the way he eats...he'll take a bite, walk away for a stroll around the house, check on the birds outside or something, come back for another bite, walk away again and this goes on until next meal time. Then, we start the entire thing all over again It does crack-me-up to no end to watch how diligently he tries to find a hiding place, (lol, I've seen the invisible dirt trick too!) while my little girl watches! She'll be back for it later, so he has to find a new place all the time. I felt so bad for him today that I tried to help by pointing out good spots and distracting my girl (though the smell will guide her to the treasures, hahahaha, especially the bully sticks). I'm worried about bugs being attracted by the food and treats, though. I work sooooo hard to keep them out when the warm weather comes, but now with my new baby-boy and his obsession, they'll have an open invitation to the house Oh well, I'll just have to research dog safe pest treatments and pray that he'll grow out of it soon or if it is a Terrier thing, learn to live with it Talking about treats and our babies' obsession with them, enough to make them want to hide them, have any of you tried 'Veggie Lite' Vitality treats? Especially the ones with apple and banana? My babies lose their minds over them. My girl looks and acts like a drug addict with bionic ears, desperate for a fix when she hears me open the bag! It's scary |
