I've read the threads about the poop eaters and said to myself "Thank God that's not MY dog."! I've recently switched Dixie's food from Royal Canin (which she wasn't very fond of) to Blue Buffalo (she loves) within the past week. She hasn't had any trouble with diarrhea and really likes the food. BUT...I've caught her twice trying to eat her poop!!! Why now?!! My dainty little puppy is turning gross on me! HELP!

Wow, she really likes Buffalo a lot. I don't really know what to tell you about that

. I've seen a show about pugs who did that and the only advice was to just pick it up right away, which if your dog is like mine, she wakes up in the night to poop and we don't see it until morning. Hopefully someone can post on here that knows more than I do, I just wanted you to know I was thinking about you and your problem!

What kind of Blue Buffalo are you feeding? Mine hated all the ones I tried , but when they were on the BB Wilderness they did seem more interested in their poo

They never ate it ( atleast that I saw ) but Chloe would sniff at it alot so I had to put down a new potty pad right away. ...I have no idea why they were more interested in poo while on the Wilderness. I was thinking maybe because it was grain free high protein , but they are now on Wellness core and don't have any interest in their poo

.

Maybe there is just somethng appealing in the BB that doesn't digest well and they can still smell it ?

I have no idea really.

she probably likes the taste of her food soo much that she can taste it in her poop.. I had a link on here about poop eater info.. I'm sure if you just put a little bit of pineapple juice in her food she will stop eating it. Anyway here is the link again :

I had that issue with Laddy but tried the pinapple as someone on here suggested and he hasn't done it since. I just give him one small teaspoon of crushed pineapple a day in his food and no more issues with this.

Thanks guys! She's on the Life Protection Formula with the Lifesource bits. Chicken and rice.
I'll keep an eye on her and try the pineapple.

I have tried all the supposed remedies and none have ever worked for me. The only thing that work for me is cleaning it up right away. I really don't think it's the food as mine have done it with every kind of food they have ever been on. Some of mine don't do it but I have 2 who are really bad

I use RC too, and it's a middle rated food, not the best, yet not really considered unhealthy. This is according the web based nutrition sites and I'm not sure of their credentials. However, I am often tempted to switch, and Blue Buffalo is rated higher and that was the food I was thinking about using. According to some people while there are many reasons "why a dog eats poop," ranging from bad potty training, to boredom, one theory is the protein in the food is hard to digest. If a dog doesn't get all the nutrients out of the protein first time around, he smells the undigested protein, and sees this as "food" because it is food. Pineapple has an enzyme that helps digest protein and works the way meat tenderizer works, so many people report success with adding pineapple to the food. Don't be fooled by those that say it makes the poop smell bad, it make it so it no longer smells nutritious. I've got to say, even though RC is a middle ranked food, Joey has experienced, no vomiting, diarrhea, gas, "dingleberries", or poop eating behavior, and if you give a food a star because of the results you have with it, RC would really get 5 stars from me.

Cesar says it could be a lack of potassium. He was working with a dog that ate poop, when he caught him doing it, he would give a bite of banana.

I put potassium in Bailey's food (raw recipe) and she does not eat her poop.

I have two girls, the older one never did this and the younger one did it from the time she came home. The younger one was kept with her litter in a pack and play and the only thing I can think of is that the mother ate poop to keep the small area clean. It is strange that she only eats the other one's poop and not her own. They eat the same food now but as a pup she ate puppy food and the older one ate adult food. I guess it's better she doesn't eat her own too. Then I'd be twice as grossed out. Unfortunately, the older one can't have any of the food additives because she has a verrrrrrrry sensitive tummy that it took me years to get under control, I can't take a chance on an episode. She doesn't like pineapple so she won't eat anything with it in there.
