| Idea Re: Crate Since I STILL don't know what to do about the new x-pen I bought and how to hook it to the crate (PLEASE see my thread from yesterday if you can help - I will bump ), my baby was stuck in his crate today. I went home for lunch and he wouldn't go potty but hadn't had an accident YET Anyway, since I keep having to wash his bed since he will go in his crate, I came up with an idea last night. The divider that came with the crate I don't use because I usually can't get home during lunch and I don't want him to have to hold it that long. So instead of using it vertically, I decided to hook it in the bottom horizontally (it actually fits perfectly) and it raises his bed about 1/2" off the crate floor so now if he has an accident, it will stay in the bottom and his bed will stay dry I am so tired of doing laundry! LOL I just thought I'd share this idea if anyone can use it to help them too! |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | One of the problems with this method is that it teaches them to pee where they sleep. This method is actually used in the puppy mill industry and while easier to clean, it's hard on the dogs feet. Why aren't you using the x-pen? Just put a bed food and water and a pee pad in the x-pen. At night use the crate, with the divider to make it smaller, so he won't want to pee in it. If it's too big they see it as an apartment rather than a bed. Then wake up every few hours and place him on a pee pad. The can hold their urine for one hour per mouths of age. So a two-month-old puppy should be able to hold the urine for two hours. You want to gradually stretch the bladder, as it grows, so don't withhold water either.

| I'm not using it because I still have questions about how to attach it to the crate, make a lid, etc. I thought I had posted that in this forum, but I accidentally posted it in "training" instead. I just reposted it in this forum, but I guess it takes awhile to show up. Can you please go to my post in training and help answer my questions so I CAN use the pen? Thanks so much! |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I don't know how to attach the crate to the pen either. Joey was pretty old before he could jump out of the play pen, some people just put the crate in a bathroom with pee pads on the floor. The idea is to put them in a safe place where they can't be harmed.

| This is what it says about the type of crate you have: Removable drop pin allows pen to be easily joined with other pens or to your crate for extra play space. Multiple units can easily be linked together for increased area.

| Thanks Nancy! I hate to keep him in the bathroom where he can't see anything though, I'm afraid that would freak him out (he's a scaredy cat LOL). He is a little over 5 months old, do they usually learn to jump it at this age? Thanks Shelby&Seymour - I read that but can't for the life of me figure out how to get the "drop pins" off. If they are the vertical pins at each section, I have tried removing the little bolts at the bottom to slide them out but they won't budge. Is that how you are supposed to do it? And if so, I still don't get how you can use them to attach them to the crate though. I actually have a high IQ but this is making me feel quite stupid!!! LOL |

| samsonsmomdana - Thanks for the tip but it actually isn't even a box, the only thing on it was just a little cardboard piece that was attached showing the pictures of the different configurations. I didn't see a number, but I will check again tonight. Thanks! |
