| need help with purchasing a puppy Hi everyone! I have been doing a lot of research and I am interested in buying a yorkie, the problem is I haven't been able to find a breeder that I am really certain about. I finally found someone on the AKC website who lives pretty close to me, the problem is the breeder does not start the puppy's shots. I have been reading a lot online and I know it is important to start between 5-7 weeks. The breeder said that the pups are ready to leave home between 8-9 weeks usually depending on how they are eating. I am just not sure what to do because I know that puppies can get really sick without their shots and I do not know if this is normal or not? Can someone help me please?! Also does anyone know of a good breeder in the Philadelphia / New Jersey area? Thanks! |

| Welcome to YT! I'm not too experienced, because I am not a breeder, but I know that you will get alot of advice on here. The only thing I can say is that most AKC Breeders will keep their puppies until at least 12 weeks and make sure you can go and see where the puppies are being raised. Good luck in your search for a breeders, you have came to the right place!

An example of a safe puppy vaccination schedule as suggested by Dr. Pitcairn is as follows: * From 0 week to 22 weeks - keep the puppy isolated from other dogs * First distemper - 16 weeks * First parvo - 20 weeks * Second distemper - 24 weeks * Second parvo - 28 weeks * Rabies - 32 weeks That's it...no boosters, ever......I got this schedule from here, it has good info on vaccines...... Canine Vaccines and Vaccination | Dog Vaccination Schedule Some people like Dr. Jean Dodds schedule ...... Vaccination Schedule Recommendations For Dogs A pup has mom's natural immunity up until around 10-14 weeks old. It varies from pup to pup. If a vaccine is given too early it will not work, the immunity the pup has will prevent it from replicating. Therefore the pup was been exposed to a vaccine unnecessarily and it put stress on the pups immune system , which can have long term effects on the pups health. It's best to wait until you know the shot will "take". A pups immune system is not even fully developed until about 6 months old. Sad to say a lot of breeders are clueless on the issue of vaccines. Some pups are given them way too early and some pups are given vaccines that are totally unnecessary. This is such an important part of breeding I wish more breeders would catch up with the new protocols. I don't know what the rush is on getting these vaccines in such a young pup..... Good luck in your search for your new addition......

Have you considered adopting one from a shelter? If you go to Pet adoption: Want a dog or cat? Adopt a pet on Petfinder you can type in the breed, age, size of the dog you want and it will search all the shelters within your area. I have seen tons of pure breed yorkies on this site, many from yorkie rescues. All these dogs are desperate for good homes. That will be the route I go if I ever get another one.

| Most good breeders won't let their puppies go until at the very least 12 weeks of age. They really need that extra time with their mom and siblings for their development. It is so beneficial to them. As far as when to start the shots that is a personal preference, but I would be more concerned with making sure the puppy you are getting is ready to go to their new home emotionally. Good luck!

I totally agree with this, I posted something yesterday to this effect. I got Wookie at 9 weeks and I he has some issues now that I think were due to him being taken away from his mother too early. I think he missed out on some of that key socialization and learning they get from their mother and siblings. He is a very insecure little boy now.

No Longer a Member | I don't really know I received both of my puppies before they were 12 weeks and they are fine. No socialization problems at all but I have always been confused about how that is a sign of a good breeder. |

| Looking for a reputable yorkie breeder in nj I also am looking for a reputable yorkie breeder in or near NJ. If anyone can direct me to one I would appreciate it! I have called several breeders some seem like puppy mills and others just about chew your head off when you ask questions. I am not willing to buy a puppy from someone who breeds and breeds and breeds or a puppy store! Please help!! |

| Good for you for seeing the red flags from this breeder. A reputable breeder does not sell Yorkie puppies before 12 weeks, so this is not a reputable breeder. Check the breeder list from the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America: Yorkshire Terrier Club of America About The Club As far as shots go, puppies should not start their shots until they are 9-10 weeks old. They get immunities from their mother by nursing which will interfere with vaccinations given too soon after weaning. They can be completely unprotected from deadly diseases. |
