Friend interested in purchasing Yorkie... Hi, It's been a couple weeks since I posted and joined this group. I haven't had a whole lot of time to visit this site and ask questions so you really haven't seen me since that day. I am feeling a bit discouraged. When starting my search I contacted a show judge and retired breeder to get some info on Yorkies and suggestions on finding one in my area. He has been helpful and I know that I can email him more questions/concerns but feel that there are so many people that come here that I should ask here first. One of his suggestions on how to go about searching for a reputable breeder was to visit the ytca website and contact breeders through there. So I sent emails to six different breeders in the WA, OR area. NOT ONE has responded to my email. Mainly I was asking them for help in researching the breed and let them know that I have a friend who is interested in purchasing a Yorkie in the fall for their daughter. What is it that I need to say or ask in order to get a response? Does anyone here know of a breeder who is willing to mentor someone while in their search for a puppy. Please help! Thank you, Shelby Last edited by Shelby M; 08-29-2005 at 09:29 AM.

Hi Shelby~ Unfortunately your story is not unusual. There are a lot of really nice breeders out there but sometimes they are hard to find because there are also a lot of very busy, self absorbed, show breeders who don't "have time" for pet fanciers. There are several show breeders who are members here but we have no YTCA show breeders to my knowledge. I have come to be of the opinion that a good hobby breeder is a better bet for acquiring a good quality pet rahter than a show breeder for several reasons: (Please understand that I am making generalizations which do not apply across the board and these opinions are from only my personal experiences as well as stories I have heard from others) 1. They have fewer dogs and they usually raise them in their house, not in a kennel away from the house. 2. They concentrate on temperament as the #1 attribute in the animal rather than outward appearance and trying to get the perfect looking yorkie. 3. The dogs are better socialized because they have interaction with humans. 4. They do not "cull" or kill a puppy of the wrong color or with some other fault outside the breed standard. 5. Most know their lines as well as a show breeder. 6. They have the "time" and actually enjoy educating companion fanciers about the breed. (Show breeders are discouraged from associating with pet breeders and they usually are to busy to be bothered with yorkie fanciers who do not show. 7. They have a true love of the breed as a pet rather than a collectible of a show piece. (To be fair, there are show breeders who have this love to) 8. They will treat you as an equal and not make you feel stupid for asking stupid questions. They do not pretend to be "better" somehow. 9. The price you pay may be less if you don't care about how many "champions" are in the pedigree. There are some exceptional hobby breeders on this site. Others will give you different opinions and this is just mine. I would try breeders.net and put in your zip code. please ask a lot of questions because they don't have to be reputable to advertise there, but I have had great luck with finding my last puppy that way and she is "perfect" in my eyes although she would never place in a show ring! If you would like me to help more please PM me. Good luck!

There are some VERY good breeders in WA and OR. Do you know what you are looking for? Male/female, 4 pounds/7 pounds? I'm sorry to hear that YTCA breeders did not respond to your emails. You can try to email them again and see if it was just a fluke (or perhaps they changed their email address or something). We also have monthly Yorkie meetups here in Seattle (at Magnuson Park), where you can see many various "types" of Yorkies, from smaller to bigger, with different colors and coats. At these meets, I'm sure people would be happy to talk to you about their particular breeder and share their knowledge and experience. The next one will be on the 3rd Saturday of September. Please don't be discouraged in your Yorkie search, there are reputable breeders (and many on YorkieTalk even) that can help you with your questions and in your search. Good luck and let us know how it turns out for you!

First of all , never ask a Yorkie for another person . All reputable breeders want to deal with one person . With a reputable breeder , you have to know exactly what you want : pet , show or breeding .
