Ross has doggie duds! Just back from killing time waiting for my son's gym practice to end so I could take him to work - it's SNOWING here in NM so he couldn't ride his cycle. Anyway.... wandered into Ross dress for less and they had the CUTEST doggie trench coat - turquoise with a button out lining. Of course, Mia had to have it. Also had "mink" stole, hat with veil and 'wristlets' for the front paws. TOO CUTE!! I'll try to get pics later tonight to post. I bought both for just under $12 total!

Ross has doggie duds Hi, I am fairly new to this board, post on others. I am pursuing a position with my company in NM. What part are you from? I understand that housing is much cheaper there than in SOCAL.

I've only been to SO Cal once, but my nephew lives in San Diego. I live just NW of Albuquerque in Rio Rancho - home of Intel. I have an 8 yr old 5 bdrm house walk out basement with mountain views 2700 sq ft + and it appraises about $280K. I've lived in Phx, Iowa, Dallas area, KS and ILL and this is one of the cheaper locations. Utilities except for water are much lower. Where are you looking into moving? There's not much here in NM as far as cities go.

Ross has doggie duds Actually, the position that I am after is at the Los Alamos National Lab, my company has been working on a contract basis there for the last 8 years and just signed a new five year contract. I am a single lady (older) and can no longer afford to live in SoCal even though I was raised here. The median home price here in OC is $633k, I rent a 40 year old 1 bedroom, small, no amenities other than a pool in a so-so area of Anaheim and I pay over a $1k a month and I pay all the utiltiies including water, sewer, trash, gas and electric. My apartment with utilities ends up costing me $1.5K a month leaving very little for anything else.

My DH has cousins who work in Los Alamos. One works at the labs, the other for the city. They along with an uncle live in White Rock just outside Los Alamos. Because of the secluded location housing is much more up there, but they moved from LA area and say it is WAY cheaper than CA. about 1000 sf home, older(probably 1970's), no garage is around 200K. But it is GORGEOUS country!!

Thanks for the info That is still out of my price range. I am really interested in a small town, older (50 to 100 years or older) home, small with a little land (1/4 acre at least) do not mind commuting up to 80 miles each way per day. What small towns are around there? I have heard that the area is gorgeous. Checked out rentals and they are about 40-50% less than OC. I really want this position, I need to get out of SOCAL. I feel like a hamster on a wheel, work my butt off, make decent money $50k a year and pay over a third of that in taxes, $5,000 cost for my benefits, and $17k (a year) for just my apartment and utilities, I would like to take a vacation sometime, have had two in 30 years. And the quality of life here sucks! Traffic, gangs, smog, weird weather the last couple of years. I am not a beach person so that is not a plus for me. Disneyland, Magic Mountain, Knotts etc, costs what an average week's pay is for one day of entertainment for a family of four. A couple going to the movies and dinner on a Saturday night, with one cocktail each will spend a minimum of $100 bucks.

The area around Los Alamos is quite rugged in spots. If you don't mind the mountain drive and some snow, there are many VERY SMALL towns in the 80 mile radius you refer to. Many just amount to a cluster of homes. Santa Fe is the closest REAL town and is NOT cheap to live in, but that is where most people go to do their shopping. Prices in stores are very typical. Gas there is higher than down here - avg almost $2.00/gal now. Here is about $1.85. There are many Indian reservations in the area, and with the climate fairly mild, many people live in manufactured housing on mountain lots. Some of the manufactured homes I've been in do not look manufactured and are truly gorgeous inside. While NM has it's problems, smog is almost non existent. We do have gangs, but mainly in isolated areas south of Albuquerque. Bad traffic here is basically none compared to So Cal. I drove the Interstate 2x day in San Diego when I took my son to Nationals for a week and it almost did me in. I HATE traffic. I grew up in small town Iowa and most days, the traffic here is very similar to what it is up there now. Good Luck! If you can get them to let you come check it out it would be great. I've only been in NM for about 4 years, and I've only been up to the Los Alamos area a handful of times, but I'll do some checking on names of places in the Los Alamos area. If you can make $50K in NM you are making more than the majority in the state. This is a poor state and people won't hesitate to tell you. We have so many from the Indian Reservations and from Mexico that are living with families on minimum wage, and many from Mexico that are supporting families back in Mexico. (we are also the only state whose license plate says USA - I was told it is so that people here don't get confused and think it is part of Mexico. LOL!)
