rotweiler & yorkiee?!

i really want a rotweiler in the future, with my yorkie being an adult by then i wonder if they'll get along, i would obviously get the rotweiler as a puppy but do you guys think they'll get along ?

there was a rotweiler in Shorty's puppy training class, he was around 3 monthes at the time, he was playing a bit rough with the little ones in the class at the beginning, but after a few weeks of training, he got much better.

I would think its possible but just needs lots of training and supervision. and on top of that, remember that they should be separated when not under supervision, no matter how gentle a large breed dog can be, its quite possible for them to hurt the little ones unitentionally.

It is very very possible they will get along. I plan on having multiple big dogs in the future with my girl. My girls best friends consist of GSD's, Rotties, Pitties, BC and a Tibetan Mastiff. So yea, its quite possible.


whe i get settled away in my own place in about 3-4 years time. I plan on adopting 2 pitts, 2 gsds and a golden. And possibly a EB.. And a Bangal cat..lol

Twinkle plays happily with my friends two rottweilers - though of course there has to be CONSTANT supervision......these two are impeccably behaved but, as with any mix of large and small breed, accidents can happen so it's far better to be safe than sorry. xxx xxx

Lola plays very well with my sister's rotty. We NEVER let them play unsupervised though. Tasha could hurt her so easily just due to the huge size difference.

I have a 60 lb Border Collie/Lab mix as well as my almost 4 lb yorkie and the two were laying there and the big dog got up, stepped on her leg, so Sophie limped for a little bit and was back to herself by morning, they are small and fast so they get under your feet, she also lays on the big dog and bites on her ear, when she has had enough, she just stands up and Sophie falls off! You just have to watch out with the bigger ones.

As for Rotts and Pitts and any dog for that matter as long as you train them right I think any animal can adapt to another. My mother has a Belgian Malinos, they are bread for attacking etc.. and let em tell you when that dog was a puppy she was SCARY! Now she is perfectly fine. As with any animal no matter how long you have had them, they must be watched because the are after all an animal and have instincts.

My son and daughter each have bigger dogs. My sons dog is just going to be turning a year old and is the biggest baby but...he's a moose. He loves to play with Roxie but he doesn't know his own size. Roxie pretty much runs under things where he can't get to her. He thinks it's a game and as much as she'd love to play with them she doesn't like being knocked over and stepped on by him much. Definately supervised like everyone else said.

Since you'd be getting the Rottweiler as a puppy you'll have to monitor his
palying with your Yorkie
Puppies can sometimes get rough in their play as witnessed by my two boys
There are yelps every once in a while when one bites too hard or gets too rough
also the yorkie being older is going to try to assert dominance
which might start some fights

Esmee love very much to play with my neighbor's rottie . Baxter is very gentle with his little friend . Sometimes , Esmee act like like a little devil with him but he doesn't pay very much attention to her .

I also have a 90 pound male uncut german shepherd and a 4 pound yorkie pup.

They get along great and my shepherd does adjust his playing and is great with spike. He's gentle and is very careful not to step on him or anything. I do watch very close though and i notice that spike is also very careful to not get caught underneath my shepherd's legs or anything.

Also, my shepherd has had LOTS of obedience and agility training so i know i have him under my control.

Yeah I would say they could get along no problem. It depends on how your baby is and how the new puppy is though. I have 2 boys, one loves all other dogs and most other dogs play with him fine. My other boy though, he is a mamas baby and when another dog comes around at first he is scared, then he gets aggressive. Its almost funny because he's 5lbs of bristled hair and big brown eyes growling and snapping like hes 90lbs! I put him away though, he is just scared. I could not get a bigger dog while I have him, he's just too scared. It wouldn't be fair. If your baby is good with dogs, then sure go ahead. Supervision, close supervision is a must though.

My brother has a 90lb choco lab/ pitt mix, shes an angel. She is sooooo good with my dogs all the time, never growled, snapped or anything. But I wouldn't even leave her alone with them unsupervised. You never know what goes on behind closed doors.

I guess it would depend on the temperment of the Rot, and the Yorkie.. Never leave them alone , because I would think that eventually the Rot would see the Yorkie as one little chew toy. IMO, i really feel that it is a far greater risk to take..

They can be sweet dogs the only thing is if he jumped and landed on the Yorkie that might not be good. I have to really watch my Scottie Bailey because he likes to run fast and sometimes he will run over them not meaning too. He weighs about 30lbs..

Agreed. We have 3 large breed dogs at our house, including a doberman. They are all really gentle with Lexi, never had an incident. My yorkie is a little bigger though at 9lbs. Lexi came into our large family as a puppy, so she got used to being the "underdog".

They will probably get along fine. However depending on the age of your yorkie, it might take awhile to warm up to the new puppy. My golden is was older when we introduced new dogs to the household. It took her a while to adjust - and she still doesn't like either of the big dogs. It took her about 3 months to warm up to Lexi.

My boyfriend's mother had 2 adult Shih Tzus. when his brother brought home a lab puppy. This puppy was hyperactive, and was constantly terrorizing the small dogs. Both the Shih Tzus died within the next year. I can't remember their ages, but the mother was older, we believe that stress caused by this puppy did help contribute to her death. Once she died, her daughter died shortly after.

I think that if your yorkie is used to larger dogs and well socialized, they should be fine. However if he/she isn't well socialized and not used to being around large dogs or puppies - the whole event might be really stressful for them.
