Yorkie/Min Pin Advice Please Well, I was orginally going to adopt a yorkie I found on petfinder.com but when I went to go see her I was told that she was being held until the 27th for a family that was coming out of state and I called Saturday to see if they did come and sure enough the did adopt her so I am back to square one.... Searching again.... Anyway, I found a 1 yr old half yorkie, half minature pincher that a family is wanting to sell. Does anyone have any knowledge of yorkie pin? Do they shed? What is their personality breed traits do they favor more? I know every dog will be different but I don't want to agree to buy her and then feel like I should have just waited till I could find a full blooded yorkie. I am mainly worried about the shedding though. When I read the ad and seen her picture I called and asked them if they were sure she was mixed! She looks just like a yorkie and weighs only 5 lbs - if you didn't know she was half min pin you could never tell. Her mother is a min pin and her father is a yorkie. If anybody have any info on this hybrid breed I would greatly appreciate it. ~Shelly

I will take a stab at this, but it is only opinion. I have both, but both are full booded. Both females, and I do not raise puppies, so no hybrids here, but I can tell you about them individually. I will NEVER have another Min Pin. I absolutely love her to pieces but she has been the most high maintenance dog I have ever had, and I have had a lot of dogs in my life. She sheds tiny little hairs all over the place. She is always cold and snuggled up in a blanket, until she hears a noise, then she is barking her tiny little head off. She was very hard to house break, and still hides to pee in my house if it is cold out side. If she gets away from you she will run her tiny little body all over the neighborhood making you chase her, which might explain why she was hit by a car and has permanent damage to a leg. She was easy to train to do tricks, but no matter how hard and consistent I am on obedience, she just doesn't get it. They are guard dogs, so she guards with her voice, LOL. But she has lots of character, has a fun personality, and is enjoyable to be around if you are not her enemy. My yorkie on the other hand is complete opposite. Doesn't bark, loves people, easy to housebreak, listens to me, just so much easier in every way. I would guess with a hybrid you would get somewhere in the middle of these two. I don't know about the shedding, I guess that might depend on which type of coat the puppy inherited. If it has an undercoat it will shed it out, I believe. Good luck, I bet that puppie is cute. Both breeds are dark with rust points as puppies so if it has the longer hair it might be hard to tell it is a hybrid.

I'm having a hard time deciding, I'm waiting to hear back from the owner. She is so cute but I want a good fit my family too... Here is her picture below, if I can get it to load. ~Shelly Last edited by Fancy_Pants; 12-28-2008 at 05:52 PM.

Awwwww, you are right, I am not seeing much if any Min Pin there. Did you say why they don't want to keep her anymore? Just curious. Min Pins are great dogs, just one of a kind. Don't let me discourage you there. This dog looks like she needs someone to love her too. Good luck in your decision.

She does look very sad/scared...? When I called about her I asked them if they were sure she was mixed but they had both parents. The mom died (don't remember when) and they still have her brother but they said he looks more like a min pin. I forgot if they said they have already sold the father (yorkie) or not... They also have one other dog for sale that I do know of but it is a big dog, like a husky or something. From the conversation with the owner they are just down-sizing. They had lots of good things to say about her, like she is calm and good with kids. She is housebroke and that is worth ALOT in my book. She is also UTD on shots and has a clean bill of health other than being lactose intolerant but I don't see myself feeding her milk, cheese or ice cream! She "sounds" perfect but I'm really worried about the shedding. I'm still waiting to get an email back from the owner about her shedding I just thought someone might know about it on here.(I emailed her around 10 am this morning, I'm not patient I looked up min pins through a search to read about their shedding and was not happy that they do shed and also searched yorkie pin and didn't come up with much. The only thing I found was that a yorkie pin does not shed as much... I'm hoping since she looks like a full yorkie maybe she took after the yorkie breed with her hair!

The way I understand it, which is not worth a lot, is that Yorkies don't have an undercoat, and when dogs shed, it is that undercoat that they shed. So, if you were to split her hair and see skin (with out really pulling, like just splitting it apart) then I would think she inherited the Yorkie coat and you shouldn't have to worry. My Yorkie has pretty brittle hair that breaks off she leaves hair everywhere. Through recommendations on this site, I have changed her food and she is already doing much better.

at Cha Cha because I can so relate in the Min Pin dept. Jhenjer- I loved her to death but she was truly her own woman. Those tiny hairs were EVERYWHERE, I was finding them like a yr later after I gave her away (long-short story), boy could she run-she had me in 4 lanes of traffic once. Traffic was at a stand still and I had to lay on the ground and get her from under a car. Talk about and embarrassed-all this after she ran 3 blocks. Thankfully she was never hit. Housebreaking she was pretty good at but somehow she managed to do her business in her crate before I would let her out in the mornings, no matter how early I got up. Not to mention she would scratch like crazy and had pee flying everywhere. Barking, well Jhenjer was special when it came to this-I only heard her bark a hand full of times out of the 3 yrs I owned her. But with all that said I WILL have another oneday. I love their personalities. Strong and independent. Gives a both a challenge

Oh my I'm getting seconds thoughts. Min pins seem a bit much to handle... The owner made her sound perfect - I will just have to meet her in person before I completely say no though... ~Shelly

Well in regards to MinPins, as my mom has had sethie for 10 years, they can be great dogs. My only recommendations would be two things, one would be to understand that they bark, and you might have to work on that, and two, as with any dog if you spoil them too much, it can come back to haunt you. Sethie has been a good dog though, potty training was really easy with him, very few accidents, he is good natured and likes everyone, he doesn't really shed that much (he is a chocolate minpin), but my mom spoiled him a bit too much and for that reason, he likes to be held in a blanket like a baby But I will say that he is one of the most loyal dogs I have ever seen. But I agree it would be best to meet the dog before you decide.

Well, if you're looking for a little mix that behaves a lot like a Yorkie, you let me know if this one doesn't work out for you. I have a little female 4 pound Maltese, Chihuahua cross that is available. She's 6 months now and housebreaking is well underway. Just a thought. I wish you the best, she looks like she'd be a sweetheart....she just needs to come out of her shell-

| From the pic she seems to have the Yorkie coat, and everything else! She is certainly very cute! Is there any way you could take her for a week or so on a trial basis? Or maybe you could spend the day there with her and take her for walks, play with her etc. I'm afraid based on that pic alone I just could'nt resist I have had dogs with behavioral issues in the past (my OESD Owen is one of them) sometimes if the bond is right you can work through some of the issues and learn to live with the rest Good luck with your decision and keep us updated
